a b "50 Things You (Probably) Didn't Know About Pulp Fiction". ShortList. October 28, 2013. Archived from the original on November 5, 2013 . Retrieved August 26, 2014. Columbia Publications published Future Science Fiction, Science Fiction, and Science Fiction QuarterlyPulp authors were paid by the word, and editors tried to outdo one another in producing the most outrageous material. While it’s true that a lot of the stories are only interesting for nostalgic reasons today, writing pulp like a training camp for crime writers, some of whom went on to write the 20th century’s most influential novels. World War II and the advent of paper rationing saw a dip in popularity and availability of pulp novels, but after the war pulp experienced something of a revival. The magazines of the 1930s gradually disappeared, but pulp novels were release to occupy the minds of thousands of returning GIs wanting more action, adventure, intrigue and, yes, sex.

Merriam Modell is principally known for science fiction and fantasy but wrote this slice of 1950s psychological suspense under the pen name Evelyn Piper. Notable for examination of social issues from a feminist perspective, Bunny Lake’s heroine is a single mother in New York, bringing up a daughter and working fulltime. Every parent’s nightmare of a child going missing provides the basis for this thriller and indeed it is not until the very end that the reader knows if Bunny ever really existed or is a figment of her mother’s imagination.

Down and Dirty Pictures: Miramax, Sundance, and the Rise of Independent Film. New York: Simon & Schuster. ISBN 0-684-86259-X. Locating popular fiction in the bathroom, Tarantino reinforces its association with shit, already suggested by the dictionary meanings of "pulp" that preface the movie: moist, shapeless matter; also, lurid stories on cheap paper. What we have then is a series of damaging associations– pulp, women, shit– that taint not only male producers of mass-market fiction but also male consumers. Perched on the toilet with his book, Vincent is feminized by sitting instead of standing as well as by his trashy tastes; preoccupied by the anal, he is implicitly infantilized and homosexualized; and the seemingly inevitable result is being pulverized by Butch with a Czech M61 submachine gun. That this fate has to do with Vincent's reading habits is strongly suggested by a slow tilt from the book on the floor directly up to the corpse spilled into the tub. [254] Giroux, Henry A. (1996). The Outdoor Co-ed Topless Pulp Fiction Appreciation Society was a group of several dozen women and a few men that had, since August 17, 2011, [1] organized regular gatherings around New York City, meeting to read and discuss books in public while topless. [2] [3] The primary objective of the group, besides enjoying the sun and book reading, was to create awareness that New York law allows toplessness in public and to change social attitudes to the exposure of women's breasts. The group's blog had reported that there had been no harassment of the participants by the police and very rarely by the public. And I will execute great vengeance upon them with furious rebukes; and they shall know that I am the LORD, when I shall lay My vengeance upon them. [243]Desser, David (2003). Harry Donenfeld's Culture Publications published Spicy Detective, Spicy Mystery and Spicy Adventure Writers of pulp fiction sought to provide an escape for readers, with their stories aiming to entertain the masses rather than attain literary status. The work was never meant to be seen as serious literature, and it was because of that mindset that pulp fiction allowed so many writers to experiment with new styles and ultimately flourish.
