Agfa-Gevaert N.V. ( Agfa) is a Belgian- German multinational corporation that develops, manufactures, and distributes analogue and digital imaging products, software, and systems. Agfacolor negative-positive color material is used for the first time for a feature film Frauen sind doch bessere Diplomaten ( Women make the best Diplomats) by the German UFA film studios. Then I received the text that we had one. An Optima Sensor 1035 in good condition, with the compact Optimalux flash. I came running to my coworker’s desk, took it from his hands, and tested it myself. Then I went shooting. Acquisition of Heartlab, Inc., a U.S. developer of cardiology image and information management systems. The next day, I realized what had happened. My Agfa Optima 1035 Sensor had shot its last shot, and for some reason I wasn’t too upset about it. In my hubris, I figured I would find another camera just as good and be fine. It was just like giving someone an XA to play with. There would always be more cameras, right? So up on the shelf went the Optima Sensor 1035, relegated to a life of looking nice. What I fool I had been. And so, my search began again.

It was loud, shaky, and intense, but as soon as we got to our cruising altitude I was blown away by the natural beauty of the Costa Rican isthmus. My face was pressed to the window for the first half of the flight, vibrating with the plane and appreciating the views. There were rows of houses as we left San Jose, then sections of colorful farms, then dense tropical forests. AGFA was the abbreviation for Aktien-Gesellschaft für Anilin-Fabrikation, given in 1873 to a company that had been founded in Berlin in 1867. It produced chemicals for photography. Most famous is the film developer Rodinal, introduced in 1892 and continued for 115 years. When Agfa obtained the Rietzschel camera works in Munich from Bayer in 1925, it badged all Rietzschel products with its Agfa rhombus. In 1926 it introduced the first real Agfa camera, the Standard. In 1927 the name Rietzschel disappeared from the products. In that year the successful Billy camera series was introduced, and Agfa licensed Ansco to manufacture its products for the American market. In 1930 the first Agfa Box camera for 6×9 cm exposures on roll film was produced. In the following year it popularized photography in Germany by dumping the Box 44 for 4 Reichsmark, easily recouping its losses afterwards by selling Agfa 120 roll films. In 1937 it brought out its first camera for 35mm film. After the USA entered the War in 1941, Agfa lost Ansco which began its own film production afterwards. Agfa introduced its modern color negative still photography film and paper in 1942 as base of the Agfacolor films and papers that became competitors for Kodacolor after the war. After the war cooperation with Ansco was revived, but only on the camera sector. Not sure if you mentioned it, but on the under side of the lens is a regular focusing distance scale in feet and meters for those who want more precise adjustments. Advertisements for Agfa products in Asahi Camera February 1930 and Shashin Salon January 1934. ( Image rights) The company Aktiengesellschaft für Anilinfabrikation (Corporation for Aniline Production) was founded in Rummelsburg (now in the Lichtenberg borough of Berlin) as a manufacturer of dyes and stains. It became a public limited company in 1873. The founders were Paul Mendelssohn Bartholdy (son of composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy) and Carl Alexander von Martius.

So I left for Finland, Agfa-less. And again, working at Kamerastore.com, I was surrounded by new gear. I played with a silly Olympus point and shoot SLR thing, and an iconic Zeiss folder that could easily be a “bring everywhere” medium format camera, but my Agfa lust became well-documented to some of my coworkers. This section is in list format but may read better as prose. You can help by converting this section, if appropriate. Editing help is available. ( June 2020)

And before you say “but they could get a better second hand camera”, you’re missing the point. No one is going to start making new cameras that they can’t sell due folk buying second hand.

Agfa-Gevaert publishes its full year 2018 results, agfa.com. Article dated 2019-03-13, retrieved 2019-04-01. Acquisition of Lastra, an Italian manufacturer of plates, chemicals and equipment for the offset printing industry. These plastic cameras have straightforward controls. It’s worth keeping a few things in mind when using them. So, whether you are using a Reusable or Disposable here are some tips to get the best images out of them: How To Get The Best From Your Reusable Film Camera. In the early 1980s Agfa produced its last film cameras. The new models of the Selectronic series were manufactured by Chinon. Agfa gave up camera production in 1983 after having been taken over by Bayer in 1981. All later Agfa film cameras were OEM products. Acquisition of the Harold M. Pitman Company a US supplier of products and systems for the graphic industry.By contrast, Agfaphoto branded photographic films are not made by Agfa-Gevaert at all, originally having been made by the now closed Ferrania plant in Italy. Agfaphoto films are now produced by Fujifilm in Japan for Lupus Imaging Media. Agfa Ansco View Cameras (field cameras in quarter-plate, 4x5, 5x7 and 8x10-inch sizes; strictly Ansco cameras) You’ll get the best results from the Agfa Camera on a bright day. Keep at least 1m away from your subject. Ideally, keep the main subject in the centre. Avoid direct sunlight into the lens. In cloudy weather or indoors the flash is recommended. Great article Connor! You beat me to it as I bought one for the Daughter for Christmas but it didn’t arrive till last week. Only the 1035 and 1535 have the multi-coated lenses. I agree about the 1535 vs the 1035, zone focus and smaller size makes a great travel camera. P.S. Although covered in a plastic membrane the body is fully aluminium, and I have seen people take it off and polish the metal which is a very cool look, although I’d be afraid to ruin a good camera doing that.

In the mid to late 1990's Agfa sold low end compact digital photography cameras under the Agfa ePhoto name, while their desktop scanners were called Agfascan. In 1997, it had acquired Dupont's printing and graphic arts film business. [1] In 2001, they stopped production and ended support for both their consumer scanners and digital cameras. In 2004, Agfa-Gevaert withdrew from the consumer market, including photographic film, cameras and other photographic equipment. Acquisition of Symphonie On Line, a French information technology company and developer of EPR ( electronic patient record) systems.

Acquisition of Mitra Imaging Inc., a developer of medical imaging and information systems for healthcare. We put a roll of AgfaPhoto APX 400 in one of these cameras and took it out around Dulwich Park in South London. So, have a look at our Film Review to see some results. Agfa film and film cameras were once prominent consumer products. However, in 2004, the consumer imaging division was sold to a company founded via management buyout. AgfaPhoto GmbH, as the new company was called, filed for bankruptcy after just one year, [2] and its brands are now licensed to other companies by AgfaPhoto Holding GmbH, a holding firm. Today Agfa-Gevaert's commerce is 100% business-to-business. And these are gateway cameras to new folk. They are cheap enough to give a go and have a lo-fi aesthetic that we know appeals. The zone focus is the ideal amount of interaction for me. It’s just as fast as using a rangefinder once you memorize your camera’s zones. The Agfa’s are 5 feet, 15 feet, and infinity, with an unmarked “macro mode” at 3 ft. That’s 1.5m, 5m, and infinity for everyone at home not using the Queen’s units.
