The series is based on Val McDermid’s first Karen Pirie novel The Distant Echo, and in the first episode Karen is tasked with reopening an historic murder investigation that has been the subject of a provocative true-crime podcast. In historic Edinburgh, developers are preparing to turn a Victorian Gothic building into luxury flats. They're not expecting the skeletal remains found within. Twenty-five years later, a cold case review coincides with a new set of murders – this time, someone's targeting the students who found the body all those years earlier. The first dies in a suspicious house fire, and a second is killed soon after. It seems the only thing that can save former student Alex Gilbery is if the original murder is solved. In the Highlands, a woman finds a buried treasure…but she also finds a body. While DCI Karen Pirie handles this case, she'll also find herself in the middle of one involving domestic violence. At the same time, she's investigating a traffic accident that's led to the discovery of a body in a suburban garage. On a more personal level, she'll be dealing with the release of a man who brought about the death of someone close to her. Karen Pirie is the main character in Inspector Karen Pirie series by Scotland author of crime, thriller and mystery books Val McDermid. McDermid is also the author of three other book series including Lindsay Gordon, Kate Brannigan, and Tony Hill and Carol Jordan series. She has won several awards including the Los Angeles Times Book of the Year award and CWA Gold Dagger Award. In the early hours of the morning, a group of St. Andrews students stumble upon the body of a young woman, Rosie Duff, who's been raped, stabbed, and left for dead in an ancient cemetery. The students appear to be the only suspects. While the four friends gather around the dying Rosie, little, did they know that it would change their lives forever? Even though Alex the fast of the four runs for help while others try to keep the girl they all know well alive, help arrived a bit late for Rosie.

The plot starts with Gordon visiting her old boarding school to write about the grand fund-raising event. A renowned singer and former student named Lorna Smith-Couper is also going to be at the event for a performance. The Karen Pirie series is set in and around St. Andrews in Scotland (a coastal town a bit north of Edinburgh). Though some books take the action away from St. Andrews at times, most of the books are focused on that area. Alex believes that he and his family are going to be the next targets of the killer and so he thinks of saving himself and his innocent family by returning to the haunting past and uncovering the truth about the death of Rosie Duff. The second novel of the Inspector Karen Pirie series was published in the year 2008 by the HarperCollins Publishers. Val comes from Kirkcaldy, Fife, and read English at St Hilda’s College, Oxford (where she is now an Honorary Fellow). She was the first ever student from a state school in Scotland. Following graduation she became a journalist, and worked briefly as a dramatist. Emer has brilliantly realised Val McDermid’s iconic detective, Karen Pirie, and the rich crime stories Police Scotland’s Historic Cases Unit investigate. We’re thrilled to be working with Simon Heath and World Productions to bring such an exciting new series to the ITV audience.”
