This article appears in the December 2021 print edition with the headline “The Martial Art I Can’t Live Without. Towards the end of the book, Rickson reflects on his daughters and denounces his father’s negative mentally towards women roles.

Undefeated through his final fight, Rickson Gracie belongs in the fighting pantheon with Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris, and Mike Tyson. The inevitable outcome was me purchasing this audiobook, listening to it in a couple of sittings and also listening the episode with the author himself. For almost two decades, Gracie reigned as world Jiu Jitsu champion in both the middle heavy weight and open divisions. For all ebook purchases, you will be prompted to create an account or login with your existing HarperCollins username and password. The autocrats are winning, the antiquities cop, death comes to the boxing ring, and France’s God complex. In particular, I enjoyed getting Rickson's perspective on the first Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), in which he had an important role as Royce's trainer. For a couple of hours each day, in a basement with leaky pipes and the heat cranked up in all seasons, jiu-jitsu demands that I focus only on the problems I’m facing right there, on the mat—or else I’ll get choked. I can't resist saying that it's also heartbreaking to me to see the turmoil he has been through in his relationships.

The book also explores some of the fissures in the Gracie clan and how they grew under the pressure of the family’s mammoth success. Another note to mention here is, as I was introduced to Bushido, the concept of the "Way" in Japanese martial artists, samurais and related topics, I managed to cover copious amount of sources to figure out what's really going on. Recent revelations of sexual abuse of women and minors by prominent instructors have drawn serious attention to the dangers of undue reverence for black belts, whose stature often shields them from censure. He has joined the pantheon that includes Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris, and Jackie Chan as one of the most famous martial artists of the twentieth century. I eventually learned that the capacity to accept anything, especially death, was the key to my physical, mental, and spiritual growth. I realize this sounds like a commitment verging on cultishness—and some degree of that is inescapable in a grueling discipline that emphasizes rituals, routines, community, and mind-body synchrony.

In this respect Rickson truly mimics the Samurai spirit in caring about honor, duty but respecting his wife little. Just read excerpts about his divorce with Kim, giving up the case with Rockson, why he chosen Pride over UFC or had particular conflicts with other family members. The ocean is too strong to fight; you have to flow with it, remain calm, and navigate your way in and out of incredibly complex situations. It was refreshing to read a very honest and open account of a life that has seen its share of drama, tragedy and success. That is right in line with a jiu-jitsu mantra you’ll hear yelled from the sidelines during sparring: “Position before submission,” which amounts to “Don’t get ahead of yourself. With that being said, this book is an amazing tell all speaking on a little bit about Rickson’s private history, his emotions, his thoughts, his upbringing and a very vivid recounting of his relationships within his family. While the book is overwhelmingly about a life in Ju Jutsu, Cani’s influence plays a crucial role as the yogi taught Rickson about breath control, and, among a huge pack of skilled Gracie fighters, that ability was pivotal in Rickson’s rise to the top.

I liked this book and, as a total notice to BJJ and the Gracie family, it gave me an interesting insight into both.Rickson comes across as a man that has walked the path of a warrior, made mistakes, as we all have, and learned to live his authentic best following the loss of his oldest son. In less than two minutes, the jiu-jitsu black belt brought Gordeau to the ground, got behind him, and wrapped an arm beneath his chin to secure a rear naked choke. I thought Royce Gracie was the champion of the Gracie family since the UFC was initially concocted to demonstrate the dominance the Jiu Jitsu over other martial arts, which he one prevalently. This is not a self help book by any means but I was able to take so many lessons from this book and incorporate them into my life. I was hoping for more than just a hint (if we even got that) of what he did to drive that evolution.
