g industrious, concocting, varmints, baffle, brazen, ingenious) which has stimulated some interesting questions about meaning (and makes me think when I’m giving explanations!

As schools across the UK and Europe wind down for the Summer holidays we wanted to take this opportunity to celebrate the incredible teachers everywhere who make musical theatre happen year after year. Mr Grinling works tirelessly come wind or shine on his beloved lighthouse and his dedicated wife lovingly prepares delicious lunches for him. Whilst on Inclusion week at a special school, I saw this book being used in a KS3 class of children who had moderate to severe disabilities. Even when they involve 'Hamish the Cat', normally an 'accomplished seagull chaser', who proves to be rather reluctant in one particular mission. Nevertheless, the book intelligently and apparently deliberately incorporates a lovely range of new vocabulary, such as 'industrious', 'concoct', 'appetising', 'scavenge' and 'devour' which children could incorporate in their own work. There are currently no reviews of The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch, but here's a review from a previous production. They try lots of ways to stop them but nothing works, they discover that the way to solve this is to send down mustard sandwiches which the seagulls hate and then leave Mr Grinling to his lunch.

I have so many fond memories of my Dad reading this to me and I was forever captivated by the beautiful illustrations and the witty storyline. By the end of the lesson, your Year 2 class will have developed a checklist of key features to refer to when writing their own instructions. Nicola Sangster is the freelance Associate Director for Pied Piper, where she has worked with Tina since 2005.Not only is Hamish the cat trapped inside, he also needs to switch on the light to warn the ships that they're near the rocks on the coast.

My daughter thinks that Mr and Mrs Grinling ‘aren’t very pretty’ but Mr Grinling, in particular, has some fantastic facial expressions, especially when he’s cross! The children will then see if they can spot the key features in another model text and label it to show where they are. I love the vocabulary that the children have adopted into their vernacular: "concocted", "varmints", "industrious". He diligently care for the lighthouse light and his life sends him the most delicious lunches everyday.

A funny story that I'd love to use with children in a science or food technology lesson, for example, how could you protect the food from the seagulls? One day some seagulls discover the lunch that is sent from his wife to the lighthouse and eat the whole lot.

They will perform their cookery shows at the end of the lesson, trying hard to include a range of time adverbials and imperative verbs. Our word mat would look great as a classroom display or you could laminate them for a class activity and for multiple uses.
