Kuretake Gansai Tambi watercolors are wildly popular and with good reason. They are particularly exciting to card makers and crafters these days. That being said, it is not a new product fad. Artists have loved this product a long time. The company has been producing quality art supplies for over 100 years and their reputation is important to them. Cake or pan watercolors are dry in a little pot area. You can re-hydrate them when you apply a wet brush to the surface. Generally speaking, this type of watercolor will offer less vibrant color than tubed watercolor, if you just dab a wet brush to the dry color and apply to your creative surface. I also love that the box has added the English names for the pigments since the last time I bought them!! The inclusion of white is probably no surprising as these are supposed to be opaque paints. So you can use white to create a more pastel look. What is Brush Gold? I created BRONZE sculptures using the lost wax method, in college, many years ago. I knew immediately 91 is BRONZE. I even pulled out a small sculpture and showed my room-mate. She agreed. The Bronze Age, you know?

Thank you for this review. I also use Kuretake Gansai and I love them! I am in the process of learning watercolors and I really like that there are so many colors in the set (I have the 36 pans set). What I like about the paints is also the size of the pans itself – they are big enough for large size brushes, without getting paint in the neighboring pans. I have to build up or remove colors or the paint is rather uniform. Hard to get my beloved hard darker edges. Don't leave big drops of paint/water cos it will dry shiny! As you can see, you can easily achieve flat washes with Kuretake Gansai Tambi. The colours would have that pastel-like feel but overall colours are still quite vibrant. For this particular set, it works well for pen and ink sketches as you can still see the lines show through beneath. Conclusion Hi Rebekah! Thanks so much for this post. Just wondering how much a set like this costs in the art stores you frequent, because the stores in my country (Malaysia) doesn’t have anything like this. 🙁 The 24 pan set (31996) contains the colours from the 12 pan set, plus: 134 dark pink, 139 purple, 143 medium yellow, 147 dark brown, 150 bright turquoise, 151 may green, 152 ocean green, 154 olive green, 157 turquoise green, 158 evergreen, 161 cornflower blue, 162 cobalt blue

Reds tend to the purple or orange side. Too many are very slight variations of Pink. Pink? Who makes a paint set without a primary RED?I also highly recommend a mixing pan or tray so you can properly dilute your paints, these are far too pigmented for use straight from the pan. Plastic works perfectly well, but I'm fond of porcelain as it's easier to clean. Pen, Brush & Watercolor -All In One! Art & Graphic Twin markers can be used with our BrusH2O to create a multitude of watercolor effects. With it’s flexible rubber tip, these markers are also ideal for working directly on rubber stamps. Behind the cardboard cover is a table with some empty boxes for you to create your colour swatches. For a 12 pan set like this, you can actually still identify the colours by looking at the pans. However when there are too many colours, it will be difficult to identify because the colours will look too similar and that's when you will find a colour swatch table really useful. What do I mean by “lift”? Simply put, when you put a wet brush onto the surface of the watercolor, how much pigment gets lifted off the surface, onto your brush? Kuretake Gansai Tambi watercolors lift great. That means there is plenty of pigment on your brush with little effort to get it there. No scrubbing your brush on the surface trying to get extra pigment and no adding layer upon layer of color, just to get any joy out of the vibrancy your project has. I've done my own professional work with these, and they're an amazing product that I'd absolutely recommend to anyone looking for either professional or beginner watercolor work. They're very highly pigmented and very lightfast, making them more than suitable for professional quality work, and if you're looking to get started too, I 100% endorse these. I've tried many different brands, and of all the paints I've worked with, these are my favorite.

The Kuretake Gansai Tambi comes in different box sets. These are actually cardboard boxes and they are usually sold with full pans inside. The boxes come with 12, 24, 36 and 72 colours. Individual pans are sold separately but can be difficult to find. Kuretake’s Transparent Watercolor is a high quality watercolor paint that delivers brilliant color. The finely ground pigment particles allow for blending, layering, and adding a color gradation. Hi Faye, Thanks for your comments. These Gansai Tambi watercolors dry with a more matte finish but are not at all chalky, as some more student grade alternatives would be. Another thank-you for the color names! I will be adding them to the color chip chart I painted up, as so many of the pans look the same. If watercolor is a favorite for you, be sure you have a set! Some colors just aren’t found in other collections and those metallics!?! 🙂

Discovery: The “Starry” palette seems to have a different binder, so you can (carefully) use them on top of other colors without too much smudging–much more so than the metallics that come with the sets. One of the biggest deterrents to watercolor is often poor quality, chalky, and low pigmented paints that are often sold as beginner sets. Water-based pigment paint can be highly opaque when used solely as a gouache but can also become more transparent depending on the amount of water added for dilution.Kinda cross between gouache and traditional watercolors. Most who rave about this are NOT trained artists and NOT used to pricier watercolors. I bought this set after making a mistake. In an earlier video review on my Youtube channel, I had referred to my Kissho Gansai set as a Kuretake set. That's wrong of course. These are two different brands but their Gansai products are quite similar. Anyway, Kuretake is the more well known brand. Brush Dexterity] Gansai Tambi Pans are much larger than typical watercolor pans, giving you the ability to use both small or large brushes quite easily. You can but separate colors to replace used ones from EllenHutson or Simon Says I tend to use a lot of colors when I watercolor (saturation) so I needed replacement in 6 months Sandy Lane Both brands use the same size standards so you can fit Kuretake full pans into the Kissho box shown above.
