Jazz musicians, however, seem unanimous, even down to the use of performance capture from well-known players – the saxophone pieces in the film were all based off recordings from professional musician Tomoaki Baba, who claimed the hardest part for him was investing his music with the character of Dai, as he knew him from the manga, rather than his own musical personality. In his animation style, director Tachikawa also appears to make the controversial decision to replicate jazz in a different form, by mixing and matching his materials and methods. On the other hand, Yukinori, a pianist, appears to be strong, but inside, he has a lot of pain that he does not show to others.

There are scenes in Blue Giant where the animation leaps from scrappy, impressionistic hand-drawn 2D, to ToonShaded computer animation, to full-on 3DCG and back again. What makes the story so good is both witnessing Miyamoto's ironclad passion for jazz and seeing how the characters around him react. If you are as lost as I am, not knowing what the goal of your life is and living the same minimal routine. Blue Giant Supreme won the Mandō Kobayashi Manga Grand Prix 2018, created by comedian and manga enthusiast Kendo Kobayashi. The main character, Dai, is always strong and straightforward,” Namba told Ryo Takayama in Tokion magazine. When I first moved to Tokyo, I tried to overextend myself, thinking: ‘I mustn’t lose to the people from Tokyo! It’s really very long and delicate, so it also allowed us to keep control over the quality of the image. Music is something beautiful and you don’t have to play an instrument to truly feel it, so what if the chords make no sense ? A fourth series, set in New York City and titled Blue Giant Momentum, began serialization in Big Comic on July 25, 2023.

Phenomenal story, plot progression, and characters as the high school protagonist makes discoveries and mistakes in his quest to explore the Jazz idiom on tenor saxophone. It is directed by Yuzuru Tachikawa, based on a screenplay by Number 8, with character design by Yūichi Takahashi (who also served as director of animation) and original music and soundtrack by Hiromi Uehara. There is an old gospel song with the lyrics, “Take me back/take me back dear Lord/to the place where I first received You. Each of them has a different philosophical approach to their music – Shunji just wants to be with his friends, Yukinori wants to be the best, but Dai wants to learn on the job and become a better musician. If I had to compare it to anything I guess I would recite the works of Asano Inio (Oyasumi Pun pun guy).A mi me enganchó desde la primera página y tuve que leerlo del tirón; instantáneamente me sentí identificado con los personajes, y me ha hecho conectar con recuerdos y sentimientos de una manera que no esperaba que un manga fuera capaz de hacer. Combining optimistic storytelling with intense emotion, this bighearted musical celebration is a delight. A second series, titled Blue Giant Supreme, was serialized in Big Comic from September 10, 2016, [9] to April 25, 2020. Then blue giant might be the manga that reminds you what putting your blood, sweat, and tears into something was like. A sequel, titled Blue Giant Supreme was serialized in Big Comic from September 2016 to April 2020, with its chapters compiled in ten tankōbon.

After having written about mountaineering with the Vertical series (awarded many times for its very realistic and informed aspect), the author Shinichi Ishizuka released in 2013 a manga about his other passion: music. The anime version, in the meantime, focusses on a liminal moment that the manga left behind many years ago – the day when Dai made the first big leap into a jazz career, and was stuck sofa-surfing around Tokyo while he hustled for a big break that actually paid money. Although he gave a lot of failing marks to Dai's performance, he was invited to come to his house next time, and Dai willingly accepted. Blue Giant has become something of a jazz emissary in Japan, with its manga releases coming tied to music lesson promotions, a compilation CD of jazz greats picked out by the artist Ishizuka, and even a tie-up with Brooks Brothers, based on one of Dai’s most famous quotes: “A white shirt is proof you’re a jazz man! In North America, Seven Seas Entertainment announced the English release of Blue Giant in February 2020.In the manga world, we almost ever see a high school kid performing a saxophone solo, so this is a refreshing change from the pile of mangas I usually read. A third series, titled Blue Giant Explorer, was serialized in Big Comic from May 25, 2020, [14] [15] to May 10, 2023. The most important thing about this project is a response to one of the protagonist’s lines,” said director Yuzuru Tachikawa in an Annecy interview with Crunchyroll’s Mohamed Mir, “which states very strongly that the best musicians… are those who manage to convey their emotions through music. I didn't even perform all that well and was stuck on second violin (To those who get what I mean, will get what I mean when I say that lol), but without a doubt still loved music. A wonderful ambassador of jazz, Blue Giant is a great success in Japan and France, where the first volume has been published in 2018 by Glénat.

This book is fantastic and the panel art is absolutely stunning, I had to compare my tenor sax to the pictures because i was so impressed! Dai's friends and mentors keep him down to earth and are just as important to the story as he is (not Individually but to the supporting cast as a whole). His brother, Masayuki, who knew about it, bought a saxophone with a loan and gave it to him as a gift. Je pense que pour les passionnés de jazz où ceux qui veulent en apprendre un peu plus sur ce style de musique ne devraient pas hésité à l’acheter ! beautiful development as he transforms from a boy to a man in both heartwarming and heartbreaking fashion. After that, as he continues his daily practice, the master of the jazz bar where Dai has appeared introduces Yui, a music class instructor. He wants to be kind but can’t, tries to make himself look cool, and sometimes acts diffident, which is all part of the charm of Yukie. The series was published in English by Seven Seas Entertainment as 2-in-1 omnibus volumes from November 10, 2020 to March 22, 2022.
