Attaching ZippersThere is a lot of confusion about the difference between couture sewing and haute couture fashion. How do you define couture? The rights owner of the image continues to own the image; uploading your image to Prime Publishing does not transfer ownership. No Obligation. Although we have the right to include your Materials in the Service or in any Media, we do not have the obligation to do so. We may, in our sole discretion and for any reason, refuse the Materials or remove them from our Service at any time. Before you scoff at the idea, know this: couture sewing essentially refers to anything that has been designed and sewn to an individual’s specifications and measurements. So think of it as honing your skills and taking your craft to the next level. While the specific couture sewing techniques you’ll use vary based on the project, these have a wide range of applications. Master them and soon enough you’ll have clothes that fit better, look more polished, last longer and make you super proud of that hard-earned craftsmanship. 1. Muslins

If you’ve ever made a skirt with a shaped or curved edge, you know that creating a perfect hem can be hard. One solution: Cutting a facing in the exact shape of the skirt’s bottom edge. Using the pattern pieces for the skirt, trace off a facing pattern about 4″ above the skirt’s lower edge. Stitch the facing pieces together, then stitch the lower edge of the facing to the lower edge of the skirt. Understitch, turn and press the facing on the inside of your skirt. It’ll fit oh-so-perfectly. With fashion sewing, you can usually get away with cutting your fabric based on your pattern pieces. But with couture sewing, you really want to start by creating a muslin, or toile. It’s a test garment that lets you fine-tune the fit of your final look, while making sure the pattern works before you start diving into the real thing. To get the most out of a muslin, cut the main body sections of your outfit, doing away with all facings. Then adjust the seam allowances so they’re 1″ instead of the usual ⅝”. Baste the garment together, try it on and tweak to suit your needs. Yes, it may seem like a colossal time investment, but we promise it’ll be worth it. Learning these essential sewing techniques will advance your know-how in fabric crafts and DIY garments. Master these essential techniques and for sure, you’ll be making quilts, embroideries, and even your own outfits from scratch and in no time! The longer I sew, the more I come to value this idea in all my sewing projects (and life in general). Approaching your sewing projects with an intention of quality ensures you are making beautiful garments that will last for years to come, and that feel as good to wear as they do to create. A large reason this has become such a focus for me of late is due to my discovery of couture sewing, and for that I have Susan Khalje to thank. I was privileged to spend quality time with Susan last year (see what I did there?) at a couture sewing workshop in March and on a couture tour of Paris in November, and those experiences sparked an utterly renewed love and appreciation of sewing for me, deepening my relationship to the things I make. Personally, what are your favourite couture details or techniques to sew? What do you dislike doing? Whether it's a top, a pair of pants, or skirt that is too tight, they are no match to a gusset. This sewing technique is handy for adjusting the size of any garment so you won't have to buy each time. 20. Petersham ‘Peek' Seam Couture tip: Fist of all, start stitching by hand (slip-stitch) the lining, tweed or bouclé as toplayer and the lining as underlay. Shown on picture 1.

Look for Silks in shops, on the market, on the internet. Skip the lining or "futter" categories. Mostly the silks are a category on its own.
