Description

Importantly, a section is dedicated to the rules and bothy code, great for those unfamiliar with how to behave towards the bothy and others using it. This books details where they are but also what things to expect when you arrive in terms of amenities but also what you should leave for the next person arriving and generally the good practice rules around staying there.

A photographer, surveyor and ex-maintenance officer for Dibidil – a Mountain Bothy Association’s bothy on the Isle of Rùm – he is your perfect guide to exploring Scotland’s wild places. Hiding away in one is my mental fantasy on a tough work day, so I love thumbing thru this book for inspiration and smiles. It includes all the Mountain Bothy Association's 81 bothies and many lesser-known gems, accompanied by stunning photography which captures the spirit of bothying culture and Scotland’s wildest places. Know what to take, where to get water and fuel, how to cross a river when in spate and what to do in an emergency. What I really like is the author gives honest accounts of the places, if one is a bit run down, you know about it before you go so you’re not expecting 5* luxury at the end of your walk. Some don’t like that they are advertised in this way, but for those truly interested and willing to follow the code and treat them with respect, it is an invaluable resource that I would highly recommend. I'm sure it will be of use to the adventurous as, even though I'm not a hiker/mountaineer, it seems to have vital information I would have thought necessary for each Bothy: size (rooms, sleeping numbers), map lat/long location (plus indicative maps), fuel/water supply (do you need to take any etc) key local attractions, public transport, special notes about access/restrictions, different routes to each (parking, distance from and time of walk, terrain).

This wonderful book is an ideal fireside companion to inspire and inform your future trips to Scotland’s beautiful remote areas. This first ever guide to Scottish bothies reveals the country’s unique and often hidden network of bothy cabins and mountain huts. Great little coffee table book, but also if you're a serious hiker this is truly AMAZING because it gives exact descriptions and coordinates of how to reach these neat little houses. This first ever complete guide to the Scottish bothies shares the country's unique, diverse, and often hidden network of bothies, cabins and mountain huts. Firstly the pictures themselves are brilliant, and a brief history is given in relation to the bothy.

MOUNTAIN BOTHY ASSOCIATION 10% of the proceeds from this book go to the MBA for the upkeep of their bothies. This detailed and beautifully photographed publishing guides you on a wild adventure through Scotland's landscapes to discover a network of bothy cabins and mountain huts that remain free to stay in.
