It’s vital that there is a strong theoretical foundation to computer science. This module begins by examining the hard questions central to computer science and reasoning itself to prepare students for the in-depth critical thinking and discussion required at university level. Students will cover the fundamentals in logic, sets, and mathematics of vectors, matrices, and linear algebra which have practical applications in software such as computer graphics. Algorithms, abstract data types, and analysis of algorithms is introduced to allow our students to make reasoned decisions about the design of their programs. Finally, they will get the chance to investigate and apply the principles of Data Science to select, process, and analyse data, and examine the way programs and systems can be designed to efficiently support work with data and question the limits of conclusions that can be drawn from such systems. The ability to adjust sensitivity on-the-fly was an underrated benefit for those times when you need more precision—especially when looking through scopes or making micro-adjustments in first-person shooter games. Your second and third years offer advanced modules, including Distributed Systems, Human-Computer Interaction, and Languages and Compilation. In addition to developing your foundational understanding, programming, and software design skills, you will explore social, ethical and professional issues related to the discipline and will complete a group project. What’s great about the G602 is that the side buttons can be easily differentiated, despite being small and close together. A row of blue LEDs on the side of the G602 are used to display which DPI level you’re at – more on that later. What’s more, Logitech has also bound a mode switcher to the G602’s central button. You can use this to switch from “performance” mode to “endurance”, which will give you 1,440 hours of battery life. However, this does reduce response accuracy and sensitivity, so you’ll want to use this only when you’re not actually gaming.

As a part of this module, students will study the use of participatory research methods in exposing real-world requirements for computing systems and ensuring equitable distribution of benefits and harms of digital innovation across the population, in alignment with a changing legal landscape. Inclusive design practices through the development phases from research to implementation are reviewed, examining the prevalence and impact of the gender data gap, accessibility constraints and exploring the benefits of diversity in the workplace through real-world examples. They will also discover ethical ways to practice personal and professional development for career progression.

For those who are fans of the portability of wireless mice, you will be disappointed in the G502. It still has not cut the cord, and maintains its wired USB connection like its predecessors. For those using this mouse for gaming (and really, doesn’t the design just scream “gaming mouse”?) the fact that it is wired offers the distinct advantage that there will not be any lag between the mouse and the machine. In this project you will work closely with one of our academics, allowing you to use and further develop the skills acquired throughout your degree. This module is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in principles of responsible computing, covering the legal, social, ethical and professional challenges that a practising computer scientist regularly faces. It is heavily research-led, delivered by staff actively researching these issues, and draws upon contemporary examples of where technology has resulted in both benefits and harm to people and society. Students will develop an understanding of the legal frameworks, professional codes, working practices and civil licenses designed to provide protection from these harms. Particular emphasis is placed on considerations relating to the need for computer systems to be trusted and trustworthy. Desirable Subjects We are committed to encouraging the adoption of the A level Computing curriculum and recognising desirable subjects. Students applying with an A level or IB Higher Level in Computing, Computer Science or Mathematics will be considered for a lower offer.

Careers

This module exposes students to the challenges associated with developing firmware for embedded systems, which are increasingly common in everyday appliances with the rise of Cyber Physical Systems, such as smart cities and the internet of things. The G602 has a DPI range between 250 and 2,500. The former is too slow for anything but general browsing, while the latter is just about good enough for gaming. Pro gamers typically use mice with DPI settings that are upwards of 4,500, or even up to 8,200 like the Turtle Beach Grip 500. As such, serious gamers might want to look elsewhere; casual players that aren’t concerned about hyper-twitch gameplay will be fine with the G602. The wireless Razer Mamba touts a maximum 5,400 DPI.
