If you are interested in a similar game in a different setting, we have a Battle Report and First Impressions Article for the game. I was introduced to roleplaying at school, as a natural progression from Fighting Fantasy game-books, and dabbled with historical wargaming. You may, to a cost (most often), add Fantastical Rules to any of your units, this making them most often more expensive in point cost so a Dragon Rampant warband will be of lesser size in miniatures compared to a Lion Rampant retinue.

But that wasn't official Dragon Rampant, and I don't think it would have been much of a problem with rules as written. The only arms I believe fitted the slingers with the right standing body almost make the unit look like they are synchronised cricket bowlers. And that side's player missed a few turns through bad luck before we made an on-the-spot ruling to fix things.I dusted off my Chaos Warriors and Tzeentch Daemons I usually use in One Page Rules Age of Fantasy and initially in Warhammer Age of Sigmar. Of course, every fantasy army needs something truly fantastic, so I will also add a 1 X 6 unit of Eureka centaurs. I thought I should try to give an objective review of the rules, but it can be a bit tought as I really love the Lion Rampant rule engine and I and Dan also working on the Pike and Shot rules -The Pikeman´s Lament togheter that also uses the same rule enginge. Nathan’s left finally cleared the Emus and started to advance towards the centre where the Hobbit pikes were formed to defend against the charioteer chieftain.

As you said, we did tweak the game a little to handle more players so we could introduce them to the system. With Lion Rampant/Dragon Rampant my rules of choice for large skirmishes, I am always on the lookout for new ideas or options. Anyway, this week I squeezed in a quick game using one of the scenarios in the rulebook – Scenario C – Death Chase.

This is a pretty elegant, simple, and very flexible set of rules that is completely stand-alone from Lion Rampant. For example – every time you think that missile troops are the answer, as they see off another attack before it hits home, they fail an activation and are chopped to bits. For a first go, though, I fancied some proper fantasy so I’ve selected Dwarves vs Beastmen and chosen basic unit types for now, with no magic item upgrades or spellcasters.

Reviews The core of this site is our Reviews of games, accessories, terrain, and what ever else comes our way. And then the two worlds met: around 1990 I played my first fantasy miniatures wargame (Dwarves versus green Orcs and Goblins). I’ve finally started my Middle Earth campaign, which will be an on-going series of linked games set in the mid-Third Age. I had a Hero (or Commander) in the Heavy Riders Unit and a Wizard in one of the two units of Heavy Foot. It's a shame there isn't a rule for shield wall as that is very Dwarven, however there is one for 'wall of spears' which kind of does the same thing. It's a fun rule set that doesn't take itself to seriously which is what I'm looking for in a fantasy game.
