Description

A truly premium tequila, maple, clove and bittersweet orange come through in the aroma and lead to roasted sweet agave and chocolate on the palate. Made in traditional way, the agave is roasted in earthen pits lined with river stones for a week, before being crushed by a horse drawn tahona. The agave's are roasted for 5-7 days in earth lined pits and are then crushed using a horse drawn Tahona stone mill.

More fitting of a Soderbergh film, Ilegal's history is full of bandits, river rafts, bribes and disguises. The company had a very successful marketing campaign around the phrase “Donald eres un Pendejo” in 2016 for the US election. The brand Ilegal has especially got the knack of catching the spirit of this drink and sharing it with thrilled agave schnapps fans all over the world. Ilegal Anejo spends time in both French and American oak casks, delivering a unique flavour profile which you’ll definitely enjoy. Though Eric Hernandez was originally involved in the distillation, Ilegal Mezcal was most recently produced by Alvaro and Armando Hernandez. What started out as a way for company founder John Rexer to supply his bar in Antigua Guatemala with mezcal (not always officially, as the name suggests) is now a thriving business in which rum giant Bacardi owns a stake. It turns out they were pretty popular, so in 2006 Rexer created Ilegal Mezcal purely just to supply his bar with, nobody else. The quality of our packaging ensures the wine arrives safe and sound, it is full compostable or recyclable. Ilegal Mezcal was founded by John Rexer, who began smuggling this product to his Bar, Cafe No Se, in Antigua, Guatemala.

The nose is full of that fresh agave teamed with citrus and fresh fruit and the flavour follows suit with the agave taking centre stage, citrus and fruit following on. Ilegal Reposado Mezcal is velvety throughout with a caramelised pear and bitter orange note and on the nose. As the smoke fades, fruity sweetness comes through - more agave and green apple, along with peppery spice, mint and eucalyptus. The General Wine Company sources wines from all over the world, but with a particular focus on small, independent producers.I was recently on a cruise and this was the only “Mezcal” they had so I thought what the hell let’s try it, how bad could it be?
