Thinq AI: bringing the intelligence and convenience of voice interaction to the living room, this Thinq AI TV can listen, think and respond to your questions. While the OLED panel technology remains largely consistent between models, the main differences relate to aesthetics and speaker set-up. The stand designs vary between models with some using built-in speakers and others using a separate soundbar to handle audio. The Samsungs don’t quite cause the reaction of a deer in the headlights (thankfully), but they grab your eye in the same way a ‘50% sale’ sign does - and they are also very good in bright rooms. The Gallery feature, which essentially turns your TV into an art installation, makes a return with significantly more available pictures (46 compared to last year’s 13). We can’t see many buyers making more than very occasional use of Gallery, but it does look great in action.

Information about the minimum amount of time, in which the pixels change from one color to another. Very often the manufacturer provides the response time for transition from grey-to-grey (G2G).

A word of caution, OLED is a self-emissive technology and there is a possibility of image retention or even screen burn, so bear that in mind if you game for hours on end. The operating humidity shows the acceptable level of humidity, in which the display will function flawlessly. It sets a lower and an upper humidity level for safe operation and is measured in percentage.

It’s a bit of a moot point at the moment, anyway, as there isn’t really any HFR content available, so it shouldn’t be a cause of contention for a while - who knows, maybe until you’re next ready to upgrade your TV. The only real picture disappointment is the C8’s motion processing. Any level of processing seems to add an element of unrealism or artefacting, so as far as we’re concerned TruMotion is best switched off entirely, even though that results in a bit of judder and blur. It’s handy for tasks such as launching Netflix, asking for the weather, bumping up volume or finding TV shows, but still needs more time to develop. Its current functionality works well, and the voice detection is spot on almost every time. Verdict Certainly the image looks duller and flatter with it switched off. What’s more, its enhancements aren’t over-exaggerated – the picture is exciting, but natural and full of nuance. Skin tones are subtle and realistic, too.The menu is a handy pop-up bar with a bunch of cards for apps, inputs and favourite channels. You may drag and drop them where you wish, navigate with the pointer, or go old-school and press buttons. Dolby Atmos decoding features across both OLED and Super UHD ranges for the first time, as does LG's 4K Cinema HDR picture processing. If only all smart TVs were this intuitive; Android TV (favoured by Philips and Sony Bravia TVs) has a lot to learn. The closest alternative is the launcher bar system used by Samsung, but even that isn’t as silky-smooth nor snappy as webOS. The operating temperature shows the safe temperature range (from minimum to maximum), within which the display will function flawlessly. Outside this range it might operate improperly and/or fail entirely. But if you place importance on enhanced TV audio rather than a soundbar or surround sound solution, and you are tempted by that striking glass design, the E8 may justify the extra spend. You’d still be getting one of the best performing and best equipped 55in TVs we’ve ever seen – not claims we often make about a four-star telly.
