Description

And even more to the point, immediately after Harry's hearing in this very courtroom the following August, Dumbledore does ignore Harry completely. From the experiences of Harry's classmates over the years, we know that medical magic can be used to mend broken bones, including broken noses (Neville's, OP36, was repaired by Pomfrey afterward). Why does Bagman in the present day have a nose that was apparently broken but not set properly? (The same question, of course, can be asked about Albus Dumbledore.)

Even as Harry watched, the chains on the arms of the chair glowed suddenly gold and snaked their way up Karkaroff's arms, binding him there. It would be instructive to know, in light of this particular scandal, how Bagman did eventually get his job with the Ministry, since Rookwood certainly wasn't in a position to offer a job recommendation from inside Azkaban. Note that no mention is made of any witch or wizard present speaking an incantation or otherwise doing anything to make this happen. From Bagman's hearing later in this chapter, and Harry's experiences during his own disciplinary hearing - less than three months after his experience with the Pensieve - we know that the chair does not automatically bind everyone who sits in it. As you might have noticed, that memory has been tampered with." — Dumbledore on the false Horace Slughorn memory [src]

Calendar and Dates

To the uncritical reader, the appearance of Bertha Jorkins in the Pensieve might seen unrelated. We note, however, that it immediately follows Dumbledore's comments about curiosity not being a sin, but requiring care. The incident which Bertha is complaining about is a case where she was jinxed because of excessive curiosity. We also note that she is close to the surface of the Pensieve, being able to rise to visibility so easily. There must be many cases in Dumbledore's memory of students who let their curiosity send them into trouble; one of them is, in fact, standing in front of him at that instant. Bertha's appearance does indicate that she is, for whatever reason, right near the top of Dumbledore's current thoughts. Dumbledore's mention of multiple unexplained disappearances might well be the reason she is on his mind. It's perhaps worth noting that Karkaroff left Snape until last when naming names to save his own skin, and that Snape is on speaking terms with him during Harry's fourth year (even if not publicly so).

When Harry first looked into one of Dumbledore's memories in the Pensieve, he compared it to watching the memory of Myrtle's death in Tom Riddle's Diary. And it's true that Tom Riddle said he placed a memory in the Diary ( CS13), but the diary was also a Horcrux containing part of his soul and therefore cursed. A torn bit of soul in a Horcrux and a thread of memory are two separate things. James once publicly humiliated him, even threatening to remove his trousers. This resulted in Lily Evans (Harry's future mother) defending teenage Snape, as the two were friends. Snape then said he did not need help, calling Lily a " mudblood", a derogatory term for muggle-borns. This caused Lily to get very agitated, which led to a fall out between the two. This would later proved to be Snape's worst mistake. [12] Dumbledore looked very intently at Harry for a moment, and then said, "I have a theory, no more than that. ... It is my belief that your scar hurts both when Lord Voldemort is near you, and when he is feeling a particularly strong surge of hatred." This is the first appearance of the Pensieve. Professor Snape will store memories in it as a precaution in the next book, starting with the first Occlumency lesson, and continuing until Harry experiences that memory by examining the Pensieve when Snape has left the room. Professor Dumbledore and Harry will use it repeatedly in the sixth book to examine memories that Dumbledore has retrieved, and Harry will use it in the final book to view Snape's autobiography.Rookwood, who was a spy, and passed He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named useful information from inside the Ministry itself!" And Bagman knew better than to look too closely at any strings attached to that job offer. Note that this scenario also suggests that other retired professional Quidditch players may be employed at the Ministry of Magic, at least in the Department of Magical Games and Sports. As Hermione says, "They were wonderful fireworks". Fred and George have been very inventive with their fireworks, and could probably give Tolkien's Gandalf ( Lord of the Rings Wiki) a run for his money - as well as putting local competition Dr Filibuster in the shade. Umbridge and Argus Filch are unable to cope with them. However, Voldemort chose Harry as his target, who was, like himself, a half-blood, rather than the pure-blooded boy named Neville. Voldemort chose Harry as he believed Harry was the most danger to him and he saw himself in Harry before even seeing him. [3] He marked him with a lightning-bolt scar [5] and did not kill him, but gave Harry powers, and a future, which would enable Harry to escape Voldemort four times, something neither Harry's parents nor Neville's parents ever achieved. [3]

Bob Ogden’s memory of trying to arrest Morfin Gaunt for hexing a Muggle, and meeting his father Marvolo and sister Merope Gaunt ( HBP10) You have been brought from Azkaban to present evidence to the Ministry of Magic. You have given us to understand that you have important information for us." Love potions are actually banned at Hogwarts, so why was Slughorn allowed to have a cauldron-full in his N.E.W.T. Potions class? It's possible that Dumbledore allowed it so Harry would hear Slughorn's lecture on the dangers of love potions before he showed him the memories about Merope Gaunt and the sad childhood of Tom Riddle. The shape of the Pensieve changed drastically from the film adaptations of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, as in the former it was on some sort of runic tabletop, and in the latter it was in a bowl, as was described in the books. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, when Harry enters to the Headmaster's office, he finds the stone tabletop with the Pensieve and he removes the bowl from it and throws it in the air, where it levitates on its own. As indicated by his remarks while the sentence is being read, this is the elder Barty Crouch's son, Bartemius Crouch junior. The fact that Crouch junior's own father is running the trial's sentencing phase speaks volumes about weaknesses in the wizarding criminal justice system. In the Muggle world, he would have been required to disqualify himself from hearing the case.Morfin Gaunt’s memory of meeting Tom Riddle, when Tom stole the Peverell Ring and then killed his father and grandparents in the Riddle House ( HBP17) As Harry is to learn before Christmas of the following year, the apparent sleep of the portraits in Dumbledore's office is often a pose. Harry has oversimplified Crouch's very carefully phrased remark. Bagman has not, in fact, been accused of being a Death Eater, but of passing information to one (Rookwood). Pansy Parkinson is a Slytherin girl in Harry Potter’s year ( PS9). The Parkinson surname is on the “ Sacred Twenty-Eight” list of pureblood wizarding families ( DL). Personal traits

The chapter covers the general feeling and events since Albus Dumbledore's departure and Dolores Umbridge's take-over.What sort of sentencing guidelines, if any, is the Council of Magical Law subject to? If they operate anything like a Muggle court of law, they would need such guidelines to attempt to ensure equal justice under the law - that similar offenses were punished by the same standards. If Bagman is telling the truth, Rookwood appears to have been fairly subtle in running his agents - even his spies didn't always know who they were. Why does the Ministry maintain that Bertha Jorkins', Mr. Crouch's, and Frank Bryce's disappearances are unrelated? Are they? Explain. The first unusual thing about Silvanus was his wand – chestnut, eleven-and-a-half inches, whippy, with a phoenix feather core. The phoenix feather is the rarest of all core types – interestingly Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort also shared this core – you can read more about wands here. The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches...and the Dark Lord shall mark him as his equal but he shall have power the Dark Lord knows not...For neither can live while the other survives...."
