Horses were designed to eat little and often and usually graze for 16-18 hours per day. Feeding twice per day may cause “insulin spikes” which can predispose horses to insulin resistance. This can be avoided by feeding less and more often. If feeding more than twice per day is not practical, feed the hay in a hay feeder which limits the horse to eating the hay over several hours. Rich in Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT) which are absorbed directly into the portal blood and provide readily digestible energy. MCT are unlike most other oils (soy, corn, flaxseed) which are polyunsaturated, and are slowly digested. Copra meal can be fed to all classes of horses ranging from breeding and growing horses, to aged horses, leisure-pleasure mounts, pony-clubbers and performance horses. For example a lucerne/alfalfa, beet-pulp based diet is high calcium, low phosphorus. Add copra and it raises the phosphorus without also unnecessarily increasing calcium. Some horse may prefer the texture of CoolStance® when it is wet. CoolStance® has a unique aroma and taste, which most horses like. A small number of horses can find the product unusual and can be slow to take to it. Start with small amounts and build up slowly. Persist, as the results are worth the effort. If you’re using cold water, leave for 5 minutes before feeding. If you’re using warm/hot water, it will be ready to feed straight away or once it’s cooled to a suitable temperature. Mix well before feeding. Depending on your soil, grass and hay profile, Cool Stance® needs to be fed with a balanced mineral and vitamin supplement. Second, the feed may have a zinc-to-copper ratio imbalance that hay cannot remedy. Some copra meal can be rich in copper but average in zinc. A zinc-to-copper ratio between 3:1 and 5:1 is ideal, but some copra can have a ratio as low as 2:1. Like the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio, the appropriate zinc-to-copper ratio is vital for proper development of young horses. Adding a vitamin and mineral supplement may help with this mineral imbalance, especially one reasonably high in zinc.
