It maintains that clarity better than most when there’s motion in the frame, too, and while it’s naturally at its best with native 4K, it upscales HD very credibly and naturally for such an affordable TV too. In fact, content levels are high, especially as Toshiba has also brought on board Freeview Play to cover Android TV’s blind spots when it comes to the catch-up apps for some of the UK’s main terrestrial broadcasters.

As the UK bit of its name suggests, the Toshiba 50UK4D63DB is only available in the UK, with no similar variants to be found in other territories. The higher native brightness of the 55QA5D63DB also means it suffers less with clipping (loss of subtle shading and details) in the brightest areas than the 50UK4D63DB. As such, it seldom really breaks your immersion in what you’re watching, especially given that the 50UK4D63DB is surprisingly good at reproducing low brightness details in dark areas, avoiding the flat, hollow feeling that so many budget TVs suffer with. MicroLED televisions are still in the early stages of development, but they are expected to become more widely available. Normally, in fact, you’d be struggling to find a decent 40-43 inch set for this sort of money, never mind a 50-inch one.

When it comes to OLED vs QLED, there are a lot of discussions over which is better, with both having their advantages and disadvantages. It also has built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, which makes it easy to access streaming services and other online content. Potentially undermining these hopes, though, is the 55QA5D63DB’s use of an IPS type of LCD panel rather than a VA one.

The Toshiba UF3D has a 4K Ultra HD resolution, which delivers stunning and lifelike images with rich colors and deep blacks. The QA5D was one of five new Toshiba televisions unveiled at IFA, with the UF3D, UK4D, UA3D and LK3C making up the remainder of the 2022 range. Additionally, the television has DTS Virtual:X technology, which delivers a more immersive audio experience. Calibration is important for ensuring that the picture and sound settings are optimized for the viewing environment.

The 55QA5D63DB’s Android implementation is slightly sluggish at times, and during our time with the set, we’ve experienced a few bugs, such as sudden momentary brightness drops seemingly unrelated to any specific picture setting, and complete losses of sound (and loss of control over the sound) that could only be fixed by fully powering the TV down. The Toshiba UF3D does not offer 8K resolution, the latest technology in high-resolution televisions. With the name currently licensed by Turkish tech giant Vestel for the UK, the Toshiba brand has been building up a decent reputation in recent years for bringing the most coveted display tech to those on a budget.

However, the Toshiba UF3D is a relatively new television, and it is still being determined what future upgrades or enhancements will be available. QLED is a TV technology that gives you vibrant and lifelike colours, making your viewing experience more enjoyable. The Toshiba UF3D features HDR technology, which provides a wider range of colors and increased contrast, resulting in more lifelike images. However, 8K resolution is still in its early stages, and content that supports this resolution is limited. The Toshiba UF3D delivers an excellent gaming experience thanks to its advanced technology and low input lag. It is expected that 8K content will become more widely available, but for now, the 4K resolution of the Toshiba UF3D provides an excellent viewing experience. Additionally, the television has a built-in calibration tool that can be accessed through the settings menu.

It still, though, manages to be reasonably attractive for such an affordable model, thanks chiefly to the way the glossy black finish of the top, left and right sides contrasts with the more matte, brushed finish of the bottom edge. There’s also enough power to push to high volumes before anything sounds uncomfortable or the speakers start to crackle, drop out or buzz. First, its 55-inch screen uses Quantum Dots to make its colours, rather than the more common but less efficient and less effective filters. It also has Bluetooth connectivity, which allows users to connect to external speakers or headphones. In fact, we much prefer the pictures of Toshiba’s substantially cheaper 50UK4D63B, proving – not for the first time – that just throwing Quantum Dots at a screen isn’t the guarantee of better picture quality you might expect. The speakers are sensitive enough to present even the subtlest of audio details with conviction and presence, while dialogue is clear and intelligible at all times, no matter how much of a racket there might be going on behind it.
