Description

Today, due in part to the Sinatra connection, Jack Daniel’s is the best-selling American whiskey in the world. It’s made in customary Tennessee Whiskey style—filtered through charcoal before going into new charred oak for maturing—but it’s aged in the distiller’s “Sinatra Barrels,” which are scored with deep grooves that permit more contact with the whiskey and oak. Let’s get this out of the way – Jack Daniel’s Sinatra Select costs so much because of the special packaging and the name recognition of Frank Sinatra. We combined our widely praised Neat Glass with one of our 3oz Flight Bottles and housed them together in a custom EVA travel case. On nights when revelry was planned at his Palm Springs compound, it’s said that he would fly a JD flag over the premises.

Not much later in Sinatra’s life, Jackie Gleason supposedly introduced Sinatra to Jack at Toot Shor’s bar in New York, and it was a perfect match. To pay homage to the man who put it on the map, then-master distiller Jeff Arnett worked with the Sinatra family to create a liquid tribute to Ol’ Blue Eyes in 2013. What I mean by that is nobody that drinks Jack on a regular basis is going to be persuaded or dissuaded by what I have to say about Sinatra Select. The grooved barrels in which it’s aged put the liquid in contact with both charred and uncharred wood, giving it a richness and complexity lacking in standard Jack Daniel’s. Sinatra Select does not mention which floor the barrels were aged on, but I’m guessing it wasn’t the top.The Sinatra Barrels are handcrafted with the addition of deep grooves on the inside of the barrel staves. As a quick aside, if you’re wanting to taste a product that uses the same types of grooved barrels – but for a fraction of the cost – check out Cooper’s Craft 100 Proof Bourbon. Very good, using words my friend whom bought it for says, he says Jack is his friend, this Sinatra says is dangerous, tastes too good. But if you are an enthusiast who has lots of experience with various whiskies, this is one you can confidently skip. On the positive side of things, I do legitimately think that Sinatra Select stands out enough from other, more standard Jack Daniel’s offerings by how it tastes.

It doesn’t come cheap, but Jack Daniel’s Sinatra Select Tennessee Whiskey is a fitting tribute to the star: bold, smooth, and excellent in its field. These factors make a huge difference in the final product, which is far superior to the current watered-down and unbalanced flagship Jack Daniel’s. The TTB was fine with it but apparently recommended that they not remove any of the wood that was carved out from the barrel. The smooth, bold character of the whiskey embodies the smooth, bold character of the man himself, Frank Sinatra. There is much more pep in each sip than I was expecting too with some barrel char, cinnamon and black pepper. The spice on the palate was slightly too much (strange of me to say for a 90 proof whiskey) but I’m reducing its score because of that.
