Description

People are injured when they become part of the electrical circuit. Humans are more conductive than the earth (the ground we stand on) which means if there is no other easy path, electricity will try to flow through our bodies. Do not use electrical equipment in wet conditions or damp locations unless the equipment is connected to a GFCI. Accidents do unfortunately happen, and reporting is required, according to the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR). Posters detailing the correct procedures are very helpful tools in this regard. The accident reporting poster will tell you which accidents should be reported, who must do this, and gives information on how to go about it. Forms for this can be pulled out of an accident reporting book. When the electricity arcs (jumps, or "arcs") from an exposed energized conductor or circuit part (e.g., overhead power lines) through a gas (such as air) to a person who is grounded (that would provide an alternative route to the ground for the electrical current).

Speak to the line owner, eg the electricity company, railway company or tram operator, before any work begins It covers electrical safety in the home, at school and outdoors and includes lots of simple ways that you can help to protect yourself and your children from harm. Test all tools for effective grounding with a continuity tester or a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) before use. Some simple ways that you can help protect yourself and your children from harm when dealing with electricity include: Suspend extension cords temporarily during use over aisles or work areas to eliminate stumbling or tripping hazards. Wait for the electrical utility to come and they will tell you when it is safe to get out of your vehicle.

Even incorrectly wiring a plug can be dangerous and lead to fatal accidents or fires. Actions you must take Always assume there will be underground cables when digging in the street, pavement and/or near buildings An HSE guide Maintaining portable electrical equipment in low-risk environments can help you decide whether and when to carry out visual inspections and tests. Fixed installations Do not touch a person or electrical apparatus in the event of an electrical incident. Always disconnect the power source first.

Curriculum

Always use the correct size fuse. Replacing a fuse with one of a larger size can cause excessive currents in the wiring and possibly start a fire. Label all circuit breakers and fuse boxes clearly. Each switch should be positively identified as to which outlet or appliance it is for. Keep a safety cap on all electricity outlets. What is included with these Electrical Safety Posters? GFCI wall outlets can be installed in place of standard outlets to protect against electrocution for just that outlet, or a series of outlets in the same branch circuit. A GFCI Circuit Breaker can be installed on some circuit breaker electrical panels to protect an entire branch circuit. Portable in-line plug-in GFCIs can be plugged into wall outlets where appliances will be used.

The classroom will more than likely have a fair few electricity hazards that children can be made aware of using electrical safety posters like this. Ensure any electrical equipment brought into the workplace by workers, or any hired or borrowed, is suitable for use before using it and remains suitable by being maintained as necessary The risk assessment should take into consideration the type of electrical equipment used, the way in which it is used and the environment it is used in. Indirect: this includes damages that are caused by the electricity affecting something else which then affects the individual, such as falling and explosions Electricity can cause life-threatening injuries or even death if it's not treated with respect, and electrical safety posters like this one serve to try and stop electrical accidents happening by showing children clearly what they should not do.Always use ladders made with non-conductive side rails (e.g., fibreglass) when working with or near electricity or power lines. You must make sure electrical equipment and installations are maintained to prevent danger, so far as reasonably practicable. This means balancing the level of risk against the measures needed to control the real risk in terms of money, time or trouble.

If you must leave the vehicle (e.g., your vehicle catches on fire), exit by jumping as far as possible – at least 45 to 60 cm (1.5 to 2 feet). Never touch the vehicle or equipment and the ground at the same time. Keep your feet, legs, and arms close to your body.It is important that you follow the manufacturer's instructions with respect to the use of a GFCI. Test permanently wired GFCIs monthly, and portable devices before each use. Use a GFCI tester. You may also test by pressing the "test" and "reset" buttons. Plug a "night light" or lamp into the GFCI-protected wall outlet (the light should turn on), then press the "TEST" button on the GFCI. If the GFCI is working properly, the light should go out. If not, have the GFCI repaired or replaced. Press the "RESET" button on the GFCI to restore power. We live in an age where electricity is a huge part of our everyday lives, but are your children fully aware of the dangers? A well-positioned 'Staying Safe with Electricity' poster can help children remember to be careful and learn some essential rules of safety. This electricity safety KS2 PowerPoint answers many important questions that will help children more aware of the dangers of electricity. Use this PowerPoint to introduce the topic to your KS2 class and you could use the following resources to reinforce your teaching on the topic:
