The stop start refused to work,had numerous false fault lights on dash randomly which vcds said nff. I have looked in the handbook and it doesn't say anything about what to do if it flashes - it just states that it comes on for a few seconds prior to turning the engine on - a kind of preheating thing.I've never done this as mines a post 99 model and the glow plug just flashes the sequence, so unfortunately I can't be of anymore help. If you have a DPF and the glowpug light is flashing that is saying it is doing a DPF regen, Try not to turn the engine off during this. Why oh why can’t manufacturers put some kind of indicator in place to tell the driver that the DPF burn is in progress so they can choose to keep going until it completes? Another possibility is a dodgy temp sensor (coolant or fuel) as this could screw up the fuelling when the engine gets hot. If this is glow plugs, is the only consequence of failure a difficulty starting in the cold or are there more serious consequences?

Dazyellow3 Is it the plug-top power supply that is making the ticking sound or the white plastic box on the wall? I changed my fuel filter last month, car was built May 2012, Date on the fuel filter was 4/4/2012, so it had never been changed, it should ahve been chnaged several times at services. I connected a 4 prong generator inlet to a 2 breaker panel box using an 8/3 service wire (2 hots, a ground, and neutral).Pulled off again, turned engine off, all seemed fine, left it in DSG most of way back and took it steady. Six weeks later it was bad as ever on cold mornings and the light came on twenty seconds after starting for about thirty seconds. SWMBO ran the battery down on mine and the ECU recorded a fault, as it completed 13 cycles without repeating the fault cleared itself. Took te car a run to carry out a forced regen and when i started driving normally on the way home the glow plug light started flashing saying visit garage! I see your logic, but the starting problem is definitely linked to the warning lights in some way - the lights come on when I get a 'first re-occurance' of the poor starting after the warning lights have been off for a week or two. A flashing glow plug warning light usually means that either the brake light switch is failing, or the brake light bulbs have blown.Ok, I would still think that this is just a coincidence, for an electrical fault to cause a bulb to blow there would have to be some serious voltage fluctuations or similar. Alternatively they would arrange for the replacement car to be delivered to your house and your car to be delivered to your house after repair and the loan car taken away. Now I am usually good as waiting before starting up so I assume it went iff and came back on but I could have started before it went off.
