Description

Ever been caught by a sneaky speed camera that you were unaware of? Chances are, the majority of us can say yes to that. You are allowed to use a radar detector under UK law. There were mutterings from the government that they could be banned, but no legislation has been presented so far.

What it can't do well at all however, as least in the UK, is mobile speed traps. It relies on other users pressing a button to record the location of a speed trap in much the same way that Waze relies on other Waze users to report them. The difference is that Waze has absolutely loads of users and Saphe seemingly has very few. So in reality Waze almost always knows about a mobile speed trap and Saphe almost never does. If only Saphe could tap in to Waze's data. The device switches on automatically when it senses motion, so usually, getting into your car is enough to wake it up, or closing your door will do it. Unlike the Saphe One+, you’ll need to recharge the Drive Mini, and there’s a small micro USB connector on the underside to do so. No idea on battery life, but after a week of driving, it had used a bar, so potentially you’ll need to charge it once a month, maybe? The Saphe Drive Mini does the same thing as the Saphe One+ but adds a small portrait colour LCD screen between the two reporting buttons. The crisp display clearly shows the type of camera you’re approaching, your distance to it, plus the speed limit. Helpfully, it can also provide an early warning if you’re coming up to a broken-down car, accident or other dangers. Two buttons on the unit allow you to report an accident or a new camera location, and with Saphe’s claimed community of 11m users across Europe plus over-the-air (OTA) updates, it should provide excellent coverage.

Since driving with the Saphe One+, I’ve felt more aware of my speed and that my licence is safer due to the fixed camera alerts. For the price, I think they’re well worth the money as most speed camera detectors have an ongoing cost associated with them.

The reason I proceeded, in the Q&A another UK user claims Saphe uses Waze data, and they verified by reporting a ghost speed camera on Waze, and then passing the location a few minutes later and alerted on the Saphe. I tried the same, and I am sad to report that doesn't happen. These two traffic alarms are designed to help you avoid speeding fines and accidents by notifying the driver of all types of speed cameras ahead, speed limit of the road, and of any dangers on the road.If Saphe could display Waze alerts. Obviously a few commercial and technical options to make happen. Like our previous Saphe One+ review, the Saphe Drive Mini adds a screen to help keep you safe while on the road. We're pleased to hear that the battery exceeded your expectations. We're continually working on improvements to ensure the best possible user experience.

Key specs – Size: N/A; Cameras detected: Fixed and mobile, traffic light, average speed; Updates: Real time; Power source: N/A; Accessories supplied: N/A As I mentioned earlier, I have noticed battery usage increase while using the Saphe devices; on my most recent two-hour drive around the edges of London to Sussex, the Saphe Link app used roughly an extra 20% battery, I left home with 100% and got to my destination with around 70%.Saphe is a leading Danish technology company, founded in 2015, who’ve experienced considerable growth in a short time. That success is illustrated by the fact that approx 20% of cars in Denmark carry a Saphe traffic alarm. That is amazing! Our range of speed camera detectors are tested to perform, and all come with our Halfords seal of approval. They’re suitable for cars, vans, LGVs and HGVs and are simple and easy to fit at home. While all of our speed camera detectors can be used in the UK, you should use caution when driving abroad as they may be illegal. They also help us to form better general driving habits by making us more aware of the limits around us and driving safely within these limits will help to eliminate the risk of speeding fines.
