Levine’s methodology is weighted toward the up-close-and-personal, telling stories from the accounts of on-the-ground participants, and looking also at command decisions, from officers in the field up to the prime minister. Much of what he writes about Dunkirk has particular relevance to the twenty-first century. German children were not being raised to believe in a world of tolerance and acceptance. According to [Bernard] Rust, ‘God created the world as a place for work and battle. Whoever doesn’t understand the laws of life’s battles will be counted out, as in the boxing ring. All the good things on this earth are trophy cups. The strong will win them. The weak will lose them.’ Collin, Robbie (17 July 2017). Most history, especially popular history written for general readership, is presented from the perspective of the eventual winners. Even battles they lost are presented through a victorious lens. It is always interesting to get the other side of the story. Not just a couple of quotes to highlight the winner's version, but an actual account of the events from another perspective. That is what Kershaw offers the reader here. McMillan, Graeme (17 July 2017). " 'Dunkirk': What the Critics Are Saying". The Hollywood Reporter. Archived from the original on 20 July 2017.

The RAF remains too hidden behind the greasy clouds of burning oil, the prevalence of passenger ships and military vessels in the evacuation over those glory-hogging "Little Ships" is too faint and we don't spend enough time shuffling along the sands as it is. The Men They Left Behind come into a deserved spotlight near the end, in particular the 51st Highland Division of WWI fame.

Germany annexed half of France, leaving the other half in the hands of their puppet French rulers. It wasn’t until June 6, 1944, that the liberation of Western Europe finally began with the successful Allied landing at Normandy. Sources Meanwhile, in London, British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain had resigned under pressure on May 13, making way for a new wartime coalition government headed by Winston Churchill. At first, British command opposed evacuation, and French forces wanted to hold out as well.

On the evening of May 26, the British began the evacuation from Dunkirk, using the codename Operation Dynamo. No. You don’t think about that sort of thing. You think about—just get those men home. They were trying to do something for us. You think, Let’s get them out!’It must be borne in mind that the generally accepted number of 338,000 rescued is a far cry from the numbers who might have been. Thousands were killed, tens of thousands were captured. While Dunkirk will resound through history as a stirring and stunning moment of heroism, it was hardly a total victory. Of course, the British did not have enough equipment, planes, at times fuel in these flying machines to cope with the incredible challenges faced early on – and later- in this awful world war. "The Secrets of Hollywood's Highest-Paid Directors". Vanity Fair. Archived from the original on 16 October 2017.I read this book AFTER seeing the movie. I would advise, if you have an interest in this part of WWII history, you read the book first and then see the movie. This bit of advice will appall the film's director, Christopher Nolan, who intends for his movie to be experienced from the point of view of 3 ordinary individuals: a soldier on the beach waiting for rescue, a RAF pilot in the skies above the beach trying to buy the soldiers enough time to be rescued, and a civilian boat captain racing across the channel to save those he can. None of these individuals has the whole picture of what is transpiring, none of them can predict the outcome of their efforts, and all of them are in constant, mortal danger from a steadily advancing enemy. If you see the film first -- even if you know the rudiments of the historical event -- you will feel often confused, alternately terrified and relieved, and spend a lot of time shouting at your fellow movie-goers (the movie is very loud), "Why did he do that? Who are those guys, anyway? Is he injured or just trying to hide?" Now that I've read the book, which includes a lengthy interview with Christopher Nolan, I understand that THAT type of experience is exactly what the director was trying to achieve, as it most closely resembles the experience of the actual participants in this pivotal moment in British history, based on extensive interviews with those who know best -- veterans still living who survived the evacuation at Dunkirk. Mandelbaum, Jacques (19 July 2017). " " Dunkerque ": un déluge de bombes hors sol". Le Monde (in French). Archived from the original on 19 July 2017. What is great about this book is the interweaving of politics and military history. The British were forced to use the Royal Airforce to protect French soldiers. This left the left flank exposed, where King Leopold III of the Belgians disgraced himself and surrendered to the Germans. This would never be lived down and eventually forced him to abdicate in 1951 in favour of his son. We also learn of the pressure WSC was under, Viscount Halifax was still looking for a peace solution and was putting feelers out to the Italians for a mediated peace. Would WSC cave in? When told there were no reserves and England would be left wide open, he decided to get who he could out. This put huge stain on the relationship with the French. As the boats came, British soldiers simply pushed the French troops aside in the desperate scramble. Luftwaffe continually strafed the beaches, the men below could only wait and curse the absence of the RAF. a b D'Alessandro, Anthony (4 July 2017).
