Originally founded in Pennsylvania in 1753 by John and Michael Shenk, legend has it that then-General George Washington visited the Shenks' distillery in 1776 and bought supplies of whiskey for his troops during the cold winter at Valley Forge, leading to the claim that Michter's was "the whiskey that warmed the American Revolution".
