The Defender® Bird Spike range has a spike suitable for pigeons, seagulls and even small garden birds like sparrows. Deciding what bird your issue is caused by is the first step. We have a range of spikes for pigeons - these will stop pigeons and like sized birds. Our spikes for seagulls have taller pins to allow for the gulls longer legs. Step 2 - Fixing Methods: For wide anti-roosting spikes we would always recommend using Defender® Bird Spike Fixing Silicone to install the strips. It is the fastest and easiest way to adhere the strips onto most surfaces and gives a strong hold for many years. However, the spikes can also be installed using cable ties, screws or nails using the small holes already along the base. Add extra rows behind the first if needed. Leave as small a gap as possible between the rows; the pins should be almost touching to prevent the pigeons or seagulls from gaining access. Step 2 - Fixing Methods: The best way to install seagull spikes is to use the specifically designed Defender® Pigeon Spike Fixing Silicone. This adhesive is formulated to create an extra strong bond with the polycarbonate base of our seagull spikes. However, the gull spike strips can also be nailed or screwed into position through the premade fixing holes along the base. They can also be cable tied in position. The Defender® Wide Plastic Pigeon Spike is made from super-tough Durolon UV Stabilised Polycarbonate. This ensures the spikes suffer no degradation due to the adverse effects of extreme weather. They do not yellow or become brittle and can withstand low and high temperatures. This bird control product comes with a 15-Year Warranty when installed in the UK. Aerial clips can be attached to the base of the pigeon deterrent spike. They very simply snap onto the base. Whatever length of bird spike strip you need, 2 clips are generally all that is needed for each piece, one at either end. Ensure the clips are facing the same way, on the same side of the spike base and are in a straight line. These clips can then be used to attach spike strips to the various director elements or bars along the main length. Be extra careful not to overstretch the clips to fit over a particularly wide bar. This could eventually cause stress fractures to the clip. If the bars are particularly thin, you may need to add a little of the included silicone to the inside of the clip just to hold it in place and upright. If the ledge is wider than 15 cm, we would recommend using our Extra Wide Stainless Steel Bird Spikes, which are able to protect a ledge of up to 22.5 cm (9 inches) - Defender® Extra Wide Bird Spikes How do wide steel spikes stop pigeons nesting? Step 4 - Positioning: The outside pin should slightly overlap the outer edge of the ledge so stopping pigeons and birds from being able to land or gain a foothold. Most fences and pergola beams are between 2.5 cm – 5 cm in width, so position the spike in the centre. The 8 mm narrow plastic base is flexible along the length and this means it can be fitted along a curved surface, such as an ornate fence or trellis if required. It may need additional screws or cable ties to hold it in position on the curve. Step 1 - Clean the Area: Before starting your Defender® Ridge Spikes installation you need to make sure that the apex ridge tiles are clean and free from moss, lichen, bird droppings and any dust or debris. This is to make sure that the silicone has a clean surface to adhere to. The Defender® Ridge Spikes have longer pins to make them suitable for seagulls as well as pigeons. These seagull deterrent spikes are the perfect way to stop seagulls from being able to access the angled ridge of your roof, this is often a highly sort after location for them as they can look for food and are up high, safe from predators. Again make sure you have the correct length spike for the individual bar. Hold the strip in place above the bar and wrap the cable tie around the base and the bar. Feed the end through the fastener and pull tight until the spike base is held in place securely. One cable tie at each end should be sufficient. The ends of the cable tie can be cut short to neaten the appearance or left long.
