The importance of “we” - you are more significant, stronger, creative, and more deeply interconnected - with other human and non-human life - than you may have yet realized. What part can you play in reconnecting and being part of supportive communities? In the first edition, the collapse of our civilisation was viewed as a risk for the future that might be preventable if we acted in time. With such significant worsening of planetary conditions over the last decade, the new edition begins with a recognition that a collapse process is already underway. There are many different ways of viewing the self. The concept of a separate self, a discrete entity separate from other people and the world, is only one way. To change something, we need to first hold in our mind and heart the possibility that it could be different.

I’m grateful to everyone who’s played a part in helping create this course, particularly my friend and colleague, Madeleine Young, who played a pivotal role. n’t have to wait for a natural disaster before opening to the rich experience of community described by Solnit and others. For example: clean air, renewable energy, lifestyles of voluntary simplicity, widespread ecological awareness. We’re working with a ‘pay it forward’ model, where participants receive the course as a gift, and if they’d like to help it remain free for future participants, they’re encouraged to donate to cover future costs. In Chapter Five, we’ve added a new section on applying inspiration from the Shambhala Warrior Prophecy in our lives. Every two weeks, we will meet as a full group to discuss the book and share what we’re learning. Each session will be organized around that week’s portion of the book and will follow a similar flow: opening meditation, group discussion of the book, and facilitated practices from The Work That Reconnects* As part of our work in schools we start our sessions by leading the Class, Key Stage or School in the daily act of collective worship. This is central to who we are as an organisation. Using a range of stories, role-play and quizzes we aim to make the experience relevant and interesting to the children. We can tailor this to link with school themes which can be discussed with our instructors. This is a motivational guide on how to enhance personal resilience while living in a world filled with many reasons to give up on any hope for the future. The book is not only encouraging hope, but is aiming for what its title describes as “active” hope. It is a hope that goes beyond a personal feeling to include a sense of motivation and productive participation with others to contribute toward making the hoped for future a reality.
