When I asked he didn't just undo the screw in the slam panel and re-tension it I was greeted with a look of complete mystery and amazement. The two T20 screws here and remove them from the car {yellow}, these are the screws just next to the headlights in this picture and then once they are removed from the car squeeze in the two plastic clips {red} can do one at a time and then remove the grill from the car. However, the release springs seem stronger, so the bonnet really "pops" when you pull the release now! Obviously, the previously removed grommet will then no longer fit the hole, but the hole is obscured from casual sight by its location within the top slat of the grille.

If I thought my Golf was going to last another 10 years, I would try and fashion a shield at the bottom of the catch body, or just below where it locates. I can get the handle off and can take the panel off to get at the cable but the dial/wheel seems to be attached to a box - do I need to replace this entire box? Mine had the bonnet not opening problem, so i bought a new release catch thing, fitted it and it worked perfectly, for about 6 bonnet opens. I can get the front VW badge off - no probs there - but all I can see is two very stiff hex bolts at 10 and 2 o'clock. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. With my MOT looming on my car, I didn't want to run the risk of my cars bonnet lock failing the MOT. Unscrew the three T27 torx bolts holding the bonnet latch mechanism in place noting each bolt's position. Whilst you hold this you will need to get someone else to pull the bonnet release lever and it should pop open (you might need to pull the guide pretty hard to react the cable tension).

We offer a selection of interior parts and accessories such as replacement door and mirror switches, arm rests, gear knobs and gaitors and other interior trim pieces. Then to open once more I could pull on the cable using the claw of a hammer again and at the same time the other person can press down on the head of the closed clip (as that will simulate the pressing down on the bonnet if it was closed).Anyway, last week, bonnet wouldn't open, let alone close, no matter how hard I tugged the release or jiggled the bonnet.

If the bonnet lock doesn't close and jams, you will need to remove the lock and find out what is causing the problem. This is a comparison to the lock placement in the above picture for future reference should it be required. It wasn't too difficult to do and fixed the issue Leveraging the unit out using a screwdriver through the VW badge was the hardest bit. However, I do live in the worst place for cars in the UK - they salt roads for well over 6 months of the year up here.If you can get a screwdriver or whatever in here and pull the lever down towards the bottom of the catch body, this will release the fish-hook and the bonnet will release. I was able to simulate the locked position by pushing a screw driver down the back of the clip and moving it to the locked position. Unfortunately the car battery is now flat and we cant get the bonnet opened to jump start it or replace it.
