Secondly the bit rate (the number of bits to provide the video and audio quality) is much higher off a disc than a streaming service. Awesome to have all the collection in one box set. The artwork in the book is excellent, bt having the discs in sleeves within the book is a bit poor. Would have hoped that there was at least an option to buy the cases for the movies to be stored in. The 4K disc of The Last Jedi is newly authored—it no longer includes Dolby Vision HDR (per Disney’s new norm). All of the Blu-rays in the set are newly-authored discs—they are not the same as those released previously. The Last Jedi movie Blu-ray now includes the Score-only version of the film and its Bonus Blu-ray now includes the Meet the Porgs retail exclusive featurette. Most (but not quite all) of the previous Blu-ray special features are included in this set. Most of the previous DVD special features are not included—and of course, the original unaltered theatrical cuts of Star Wars, Empire, and Jedi are not included.

High Dynamic Range (HDR) is also better off the disc so the clarity and contrast in the darker and lighter areas of the picture are even more detailed and defined. There have been several remasters over the years when the movies arrived on DVD and then Blu-ray and now 4K so they’ve been in great shape. The opening battle in Revenge of the Sith also looks pristine and makes all of your speakers work over time.

Conversations: Creating a Universe – 8 minute feature, new for this release, with Joe Johnston (from ILM) and Roger Christian (a Star Wars set dresser and a second unit director) who meet and discuss their time on the franchise at the Skywalker Ranch. Needless to say, I am somewhat obsessive, when it comes to watching / owning Star Wars Movies which produce the very best Audio-Visual experience available. This Boxset achieves the Very Best Audio-Visual Experience EVER. Although I enjoy the Prequel and Sequel Trilogies, my real love is for the Original Special Edition Trilogy. There is no doubt in my mind that this version of the Original Trilogy (Episode IV) transferred to 4K UHD/HDR is absolutely amazing for its clarity, colour and detail, on a movie which is over 40 years old. I have watched episodes I -IV with IV (The New Hope) being my favourite and can say that the Dolby Atmos Sound experience on these Movies, is absolutely Exceptional. We did notice the films looked a lot more natural on 4K when compared with the Blu-rays which tended to be warmer with a more reddish tinge to the image. Deleted/Extended Scenes – Excised scene titled: Tosche Station, Old Woman on Tatooine, Aunt Beru's Blue Milk, The Search for R2-D2, Cantina Rough-Cut, Stormtrooper Search, Darth Vader Widens the Search, and Alternate Biggs and Luke Reunion. But what was also amazing was how much the HDR improved the image and showed off shapes and objects in the shadows we normally would have missed. Blu-ray (top) v 4K

Difficult to believe Tremors was released 30 years ago. The film is ageless; taking its inspiration from the 50’s Drive-in horror genre and injecting the clever and witty script with humour and likeable, believable characters, the film is lean, mean, funny and above all entertaining; it is in many ways a perfect movie and continues to win fans today. What the 4K discs revealed were details we didn’t know were there even though we’ve watched them hundreds of times. Like the scratches and marks on R2D2 and C3P0, the detail of Darth Vader’s helmet that is only now being seen in all its glory and the natural skin tones of Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia. There is not much that can be said about Star Wars that has not already been said – a landmark film that means so much to a generation and a franchise that gives as much as it takes away; a simple story told with verve and one that still manages to capture the imagination.Firstly, they offer a repeatable high quality experience regardless of the speed of your internet connection. Rey and Kylo Ren battling it out on the ruins of the Death Star beside monstrous seas is also a treat for the eyes and the ears. Give me a The Mandalorian Collector’s Edition with a full-sized Baby Yoda included in the price and I’ll happily bite your hand off for it!

With all that in mind here’s our take on the best scenes in the Star Wars films that will make you appreciate the quality you can enjoy from the 4K disc. Wonderfully remastered with a fine attention to detail, The Columbia Classics Box Set covered such diverse films as: A League of their Own, Gandhi, Dr Strangelove, Mr Smith goes to Washington, Jerry Maguire, and Lawrence of Arabia; here’s what we said about David Lean's masterpiece: The Return of the Jedi forest speeder chase is a standout with a lot of detail revealed in the trees and darker areas of the screen on 4K and HDR. Star Wars was shot using a combination of Arriflex 35-III, Panavision PSR R-200, Panavision Panaflex X and Panavision Panaflex cameras on 35mm film, and has been newly scanned with 4K resolution for this release. It should be noted that the latest ‘Special Edition edit’ has been the source for this scan, it therefore contains much of the colouring inherent to that release. The disc presents a native 3840 x 2160p resolution image in the widescreen 2.39:1 aspect ratio, and uses 10-bit video depth, High Dynamic Range, and is encoded using the HEVC (H.265) codec for HDR10. We reviewed the Region free UK Ultra HD Blu-ray release of Star Wars on a Panasonic 65DX902B Ultra HD 4K TV with a Panasonic DMP-UB400 Ultra HD Blu-ray player.

4. Columbia Classics

David Lean’s undisputed king of the epics, Lawrence of Arabia, may be mostly fantasy in terms of its titular character and his actions, but the film is completely magnificent – running at 3 hours 48 minutes the length is a positive boon to the narrative; allowing scenes to unfold naturally, giving a true sense of scale to the picture. The whole is epic in every sense of the word; locations, sets, acting talent, design and story – we are unlikely to ever see its like again. The UHD disc reviewed comes as part of the ‘Skywalker Saga’ set which is a lavish box set and included is a collector’s book, that houses all the discs (careful as you remove them!), two Blu-rays, one with the film, the other loaded with extras and a letter from Mark Hamill himself. The UHD has no extras itself. Showcase scenes: The skiff chase in the Pasaana desert not only provides sharp visuals but fantastic directional audio that will use every speaker in your system or make your soundbar work overtime. The ninth and final Star War film in the Skywalker saga – The Rise of Skywalker – has been released on 4K UHD but an equally exciting release on 4K disc is the original and prequel trilogies for the very first time. Much has been said and written about George Lucus’ most successful film, so it’s somewhat difficult to bring something fresh to a review. So, instead of going down tried and tested routes, I thought I’d bring something unique: my own Star Wars
