Huguet, Adrien (2021) [1st pub. 1920]. Le marquis de Cavoye (softcover) (in French). Paris: Hachette. ISBN 978-2-3295-5958-2. Noone, John (1989). "Le Masque sous son vrai visage". Il y a trois siècles, le Masque de fer (in French). Cannes, France: OMACC. In France, Cardinal Mazarin has died, leaving Louis to assume power with Jean-Baptiste Colbert as his finance minister. Colbert has an intense hatred for his superior the king's Superintendent of Finances, Nicolas Fouquet, and tries to bring about his fall. He brings to the king's attention that Fouquet is fortifying his fief of Belle Île secretly. Louis persuades d'Artagnan to re-enter his service, and tasks him to investigate Belle Île, promising him a substantial salary and promotion to Captain of the King's Musketeers on his return. Louis, finally growing into a decisive ruler, also accepts an offer relayed by Athos from Charles II to marry Louis' brother Philippe I, Duke of Orléans to Charles' sister Henrietta Anne Stuart. Barnes (1908) presents James de la Cloche, the alleged illegitimate son of the reluctant Protestant Charles II of England, who would have been his father's secret intermediary with the Catholic court of France. Dumas is my favourite author for a reason. He manipulates words beautifully but uses them to tell stories full of action, intrigue, heroes and adventure. I always feel devastated when I remember he's no longer around to be producing works of such unique calibre. There are accounts that at the time of his death, the prisoner was about 60 years old. When he was transferred to Exilles in 1687, the prisoner had gray hair. Superb! Simply brilliant research by Oxford historian Roger Macdonald. Having begun this book largely ignorant of this period of French history and unable to differentiate one King Louis from another, thinking that a Bourbon was a biscuit, 'The Man in the Iron Mask' was a revelation. Gonnet, Paul (1989). "Conclusion". Il y a trois siècles, le Masque de fer (in French). Cannes, France: OMACC. de la Barre-de-Raillicourt, Dominiue (1989). The Prisoner’s Days In The Bastille

Thanks to the secret power of the Jesuits, which he now commands, Aramis reaches Spain and becomes Duc d'Almeda, Spain's ambassador to France. Louise de la Vallière is eventually supplanted in the king's affections by her erstwhile friend Madame de Montespan. Louis grows in power and stature, and embarks on a military campaign against the Dutch Republic, with d'Artagnan commanding the offensive. D'Artagnan is mortally wounded in battle during a siege moments after reading he is to be made Marshal of France. His final words are: "Athos, Porthos, au revoir! Aramis, adieu forever!" Brugnon, Stanislas (1989). "Identité de l'Homme au Masque de fer". Il y a trois siècles, le Masque de fer (in French). Cannes, France: OMACC. I also wasn't impressed with the manner Dumas handled his three aging Musketeers. I was never fond of them. But they represented a certain dignity and fierce loyalty. This image was heavily mishandled and that somewhat ruined their characters. Was Dumas in a hurry to end their tale or was he too careless or too tired with them to care? My opinion is that he should have ended their long tale with more care and respect.

The story begins with a man named Baisemeaux and another man, Aramis walking to a prison cell in the Bastille, the largest and most well known prison in all of France. We are told by Baisemeaux's thoughts that he and Aramis used to be good friends, but since Aramis was promoted to a position above him they are no longer close. I am torn. As much as I am in love with the Musketeers I cannot accept the code of honor they live by. Because they adhere so religiously to their honor code they are led into life threatening and adventurous episodes which entertain much in reading about them, but I was left mystified by the underlying dismal outcomes in most cases. Dumas, Alexandre (1840). Crimes Célèbres. Vol.VIII. Arnould; Fournier; Fiorentino; Mallefille. Paris: Administration de Libraire. In this version, the "man in the iron mask" is introduced as prisoner number 64389000 based on the number related to his namesake found at the Bastille. [5] The Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte acts as the primary residence of the king as Versailles was still early in its construction and years away from Louis establishing residence there.
