The Evil of the Daleks is the mostly-missing ninth and final serial of the fourth season of the British series Doctor Who, which originally aired in seven weekly parts from 20th May to 1st July 1967. The Invasion – after tenth planet, this is the next go to for partially missing stories, and there is a lot of material still left – again depends on if they would update some of the animations to have a shada-like colourisation Though the truncated 75-minute version of The Daleks will first air on BBC4 on the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who (i.e. 23rd November 2023), 12th February 2024 will see the 75-minute version of this Terry Nation-scripted story colourised and out on physical formats. I previously reviewed ‘ The Power of the Daleks‘ and praised it, describing animation as “a more than worthy medium for telling tales long thought lost.” That sentiment still rings true but now that animation is even better. Episodes are smoother, sharper and well worth reinvestment. ‘ Power of the Daleks‘ remains an absolute classic. A layered story with complex characters and some memorable visuals featuring Doctor Who’s greatest creations. Compared with the previous Dalek episodes, these seem small and contained. In the context of the mythologizing arc claimed by this box set the story becomes a filler between the Emperor Dalek and Davros, almost a Dalek holiday. The concept of a human/Dalek hybrid is suitably creepy and well done, but I can’t help preferring the realisation of a similar idea in Revelation Of The Daleks. The announcement lands on the 53rd anniversary in which the last episode of the original version was aired. The new animated release will be available on DVD, Blu-ray and a Limited Edition Blu-ray Steelbook from 27th September 2021. The story follows the very first crew of the TARDIS as they land in a petrified forest on an alien planet. Determined to explore, the Doctor (William Hartnell) leads his companions into the metal city, where they discover danger at every corner and what will become his deadliest enemy, the mutant Daleks. While it is certainly the weakest adventure in this box set, the story does have aspects that are commendable. Placing the Daleks in a historical setting is an underused but very satisfying conceit and the period details are convincingly presented. The problem here is that the historical setting turns out not to be very interesting. I’m not a huge fan of the endlessly repeated ‘surprise’ appearances of Daleks at the end of the season, but if you are going to include them, it is best to make them the centre of the story. The box set comes with one special feature: an interview with David Tennant. This doesn’t really contribute anything new and is more self-congratulatory than analytical. Indeed ,a great deal of time is spent during the interview talking about Doomsday, only drawing attention to the episode’s absence from the collection. The incredibly fancy (and, truth be told, a little more expensive) Steelbook format is the only choice for those needing a physical media release that doubles as a table tennis bat in a pinch. BBC Studios announce Doctor Who: The Evil of the Daleks Animation, due for release on 27th September 2021. It’s time to encounter the Daleks once again, but this time in a way you’ve never seen them before. As part of the 60th anniversary celebrations of iconic series Doctor Who, The Daleks, one of the show’s most renowned tales is undergoing an out of this world update as it receives an artistic colourisation. The War Games – now this one I could see being a long project indeed, perhaps even over two omnibuses or even a longer one… this one would be very long to complete though

I kind of like the fact the original episodes themselves aren’t being colourised, and that it is a new format for the story, traditionalists can then see the original, and newbies or the interested people can get into this colourised version! I mean they have cut a seven parter into the runtime of a three parter, Tenth PLanet, being so slow, could end up being 45-50 minutes long if they did the animation. Released: Coming soon. The Stolen Earth is spectacular. This doesn’t mean it’s great. I’d contend that the best episodes of the new series, Human Nature, Blink, Utopia, achieve greatness without spectacle. For me, despite the claims of the production team at the time, the world of Art Deco and Dalek design don’t gel easily. In all, the season three Dalek episodes have the appearance of a desire to include the Daleks regardless of story.

UK DVD and Blu-ray release dates confirmed: up to early 2024

The first episode in the box set reintroduces the Daleks by surprisingly presenting them in the singular. The intention of this is to delay the impact of seeing an army of Daleks in the climax of the first season, but it also has a more subtle effect. Pitting the new Doctor and Rose against a single, at first seemingly defenceless Dalek, slowly reveals to the viewer the antagonistic relationship between the Time Lord and the monster.
