Description

Bawden and Ravilious met in the design school of the Royal College of Art in 1922, members of a generation of students described by Paul Nash, one of their tutors as belonging to 'an outbreak of talent'. What surely should be evident to everyone interested in the artist now is the need for a full biography. The first chapter concentrates on his childhood, his early days as an art student at Eastbourne and at the RCA, and his early mural commissions.

There’s a gentle and quirky wit to his pictures: the policeman twirls his truncheon much as a child might twirl an imaginary wand; the string of helium balloons sold in the park, an outsized illustration which seems to capture the way a child might prioritize its visual scene, reaches higher than the tallest of palm trees. Often described as a particularly 'English' artist, the key to his style was an ability to convey in watercolour the mild vagaries of the British climate. The book is in Puffin Picture Book format, but with an accompanying wrap around dustwrapper inside which is told the story of White Horses and the journey towards this book.Beyond that, it's contribution to a sense of Englishness is still with us today, inspiring a kind of nostalgia for a past life in the villages, lanes, landscapes and harbours of pre-war England. Profusely illustrated throughout, mostly in colour, including reproductions of all 24 plates from the original edition of "High Street".

These man-made artefacts allow an association to the absent walker, farmer or machine operator, but the lack of actual presences can sometimes lend a certain sadness to the poignant beauty of the pictures. Here, for one year prior to the beginning of the war, Vaughan and Passmore would reside, painting, listening to music and visiting the ballet. If you are looking for a specific print not listed here, please register your interest by completing this form - we'll ensure you're contacted first when these works become available. This gorgeous new book features beautiful woodcut images of countryside life, watercolours of rolling landscapes and many of Ravilious’ acute and profound war paintings. Often described as a particularly ‘English’ artist, key to his style was an ability to convey in watercolour the mild vagaries of the British climate.

Probably the most comprehensive book on Ravilious which will doubtless sell out at the Dulwich exhibition next year.
