Desperate to earn her cooperation, the Halabys try to retask Gentry with another job: spirit away Medina's infant son from Syria in what is considered a suicide mission, which Court initially refuses. He later rescues the Halabys from being tortured for Medina's whereabouts by two French police officers sent by Swiss bank consultant & Shakira's right-hand man Sebastian Drexler. Court then agrees to rescue Medina's son as well as his babysitter, named Yasmin, from Damascus after she allows him to do so. One week earlier.... Gentry is ex-CIA, now an assassin for hire. He meets in Paris with Dr. Tarek Halaby, head of the Free Syria Exile Union, or what’s left of it. Greaney also explained that this book is different from previous books because “Court’s motivations are different this time out. He has new allies and new enemies, and you’ll meet some new characters you can expect to see in later installments.” For those who didn’t know, Greaney has flirted with Hollywood several times in the past. He opened up about all that, revealing that he read several different version of various scripts, which were all attached to a Gray Man movie at one point or another. We ended things by talking about Agent in Place, which, by the way, was originally titled ‘Weaponized.’ I asked Mark why the title changed, and he said there were two main reasons.

That said, I thoroughly enjoyed the book, especially his treatment of the Syrian Civil War. He animated this conflict including how mercenary groups are coordinated and deployed. The book is well written and plotted. The pace is very fast with constant action. This a series that has each book capable of being a stand-alone book. It is obvious Greaney does a lot of research to make his books accurate politically, weaponry, spy craft and also the geography. The characters are interesting and realistic. I am always amazed at Greaney’s ability to write such intricate plots. He is a master storyteller.

I always like the names to have something to do with the story, so I started just looking through this big list of names I have for potential books. I have maybe two or three dozen ideas of titles just laying around, and one of them was Agent in Place. Originally, I think Tom Colgan thought of it, and it totally fits this story because ‘agent in place’ refers to an operative who has penetrated into some sort of intelligence target, and that is what the Gray Man does in this one.” Meanwhile, Sauvage identifies the location of the FSEU safehouse where Medina is being kept, which he relays to Drexler as well as Malik and his men. They infiltrate the estate, making Voland surrender himself to them and killing Tarek in the process. Rima manages to let Medina escape and then sets fire to the house; she was also killed. As Drexler and his henchmen leave the burning building, Sauvage and Malik find Medina running away and then capture her. loops:for

To reiterate, this book is unapologetically action. There really is nothing else to appeal to a wider audience so if you are looking for something more inclusive of other genres, this isn’t it. It was refreshing and an escape for me. I’ve been spending a lot of my reading time engulfed in historical romances or historical mysteries and this was so far from things I have been reading that it was a welcome distraction.Yeah, there was no rush because I liked the idea that there was this hit out on him, and he’s trying to figure out what he did wrong. I wanted to milk that as long as I could,” said Greaney, once again laughing, “and then pay it off to the readers who have spent time reading the books.”
