It is one of the most complex games I’ve ever played but this doesn’t make it hard to pick up at the start. The first 3 rounds you focus on production and the last 2 rounds you complete 6-8 contracts for you points. Clans of Caledonia is another one of those Kickstarter projects (alongside Shadowscape) that I opted to back relatively early during it’s campaign.

Long time fans of my content know how much I love asymmetric gameplay and Clans of Caledonia is definitely up there for having some of the most asymmetric player powers out there and lots of them. I tend to place my trust in the design of the creator rather than my own ability to discern power rankings. After 5 rounds have been completed final scoring takes place with your final glory total added to several other points scoring opportunities for your overall final score. In particular, there can be a tendency from players to build their engine one turn longer than necessary, or to permit for greater concentration of assets in the early game.As a consequence, food production increased to support the growth in population, cheap cotton imports increasingly replaced linen, and raising sheep gained importance. At the start of the game, there’s plenty of room for expansion, but this quickly becomes not the case as you start rubbing against the other players. The back of the box lists the games components and theme along with showing one players board, the main board and the market. The game is quite a long teach with several actions to explain and their overall repercussions to the game state and how players will affect the market as well as the value of import goods at the end of the game. If you want to see this gameplay in action, I would recommend watching some of viper’s or logus30’s games or even my games.
