There was a quixotic quality about Shaw and his partners that was both a necessity to the center’s operation and a detriment to its survival. The JFK Review Board formed on JFK’s heels studies the Secret Service, whose duties the House called “deficient.” Its agents had that very year, 1995, destroyed what was surely damning evidence of its involvement; gone were documents describing how limo damage came from crossfire. One former agent remembers agents vowing to “quit the Secret Service rather than give up their lives for Kennedy.” Two books—attorney Mark Lane’s Rush to Judgment, which has sold over a million copies, and Edward Jay Epstein’s Inquest, based on his Cornell thesis—spark reevaluation of the Warren report. A fellow officer has mentioned making "numerous" copies of the Oswald pictures for his colleagues. However, even if this particular print was intended merely as a keepsake, why was there no copy of it in the evidence assembled for the official inquiry? It reflects, at best, astonishingly sloppy handling of evidence. Several officers must have known about this version of the photograph in 1963, for it shows Oswald in a stance with the rifle which was copied in police reenactment experiments. Perhaps, indeed, they once knew of more copies. The last act of this comedy of police work does nothing to still the suspicions of those who suspect hanky-panky with the rifle poses.
