Type the following command to confirm the hibernation status and press Enter: powercfg /availablesleepstates If the other machine does not respond to a single ping, then it does a couple of re-tests at 5 second intervals, just to be sure that the other machine has failed. If you want to do something unique or different with your PC’s power switch, you need to understand what you’re working with so you can do it right. If that doesn’t work, unplug your computer from the wall, and open your case to get access to your internal components. This process will vary depending on your case, so follow any appropriate documentation and instructions to get access to the inside of your PC. It’s possible that your system is getting power — as indicated by lights on the internal hardware — but still isn’t powering on properly. If your system still isn't reacting when the power button on your case is pressed, or if it’s turning on for a second then shutting down again, follow the steps below.

Start by unplugging the cable that runs from your PC’s power supply to the outlet before doing anything else inside your computer. Also, be sure to disconnect any external peripherals, like keyboards, mice or external hard drives, and monitor cables that are plugged into your computer. USB devices or display connections cables can occasionally cause power issues, and if your PC boots without any plugged in, plug each one separately and test until you’ve found the problematic peripheral, and either try and boot without it or test with a replacement. The list of my GPIO pins and there connections is as follows. Mine is an original spec RPI with the original GPIO layout as shown here If it has failed then either add the reset code to this script or call a separate script to do the reset (my preference as it's easier to debug). The reason I specified 11 seconds in my (hopefully correct) python script was that I need to hold down my power button for 10 seconds to perform a hard reset, this would be the last options if for some reason the PC didn't respond. Of course, in my other scripts, such as the regular shutdown, I have set the time at 0.5 seconds which should simulate me just pressing the power button. Mnpctech is only source for these On/Off switches for accessories or Momentary Desktop Computer Power ON switch (ATX MAIN POWER) or sometimes referred to as the Nuke Button or Fighter Pilots. RFID switches are similar to magnetic switches in that they can be completely hidden when installed, but they open in proximity to a specific RFID token rather than a magnet. If your system turns on when using the onboard power button, or when jumping the headers with a screwdriver, it could be that your case is the problem. If your case has a reset button, you’ll find it’s wired to the reset switch headers near the power button headers. Try replacing the cables to your power button headers with those from the reset button. They operate in the same way, and if the problem is the power button in your case, wiring the reset button to the power switch headers might circumvent this issue. A lot of new PC modders start with the same things: side-panel windows used to be a very common first mod but they’re pretty much standard issue now. One of the other most common initial mods is the power switch.

Motion or proximity switches are used every day in room lighting and alarm systems, turning on lights or activating and alarm when motion is seen in a given space. A missile switch is a simple toggle switch with a spring-loaded cover over it, typically red. To flip the switch, you have to first lift the outer cover. Similar to the biometric switch, there is usually more involved with an RFID switch than just the switch and a couple of wires. How complex the wiring connection are will depend on the model of switch you’re working with. For testing, the script echoes messages to the screen. Once working, a) remove the general "All is well message" and b) redirect the restart message to a log file, for example: Once there, CHMOD all the files through your FTP program. Ensure they are all set to 777 otherwise your scripts cannot be ran from the web. The first thing to do is to cut two pieces of wire to the length you need. Depending on how you will be situating this PSU and switch, your wire may only be a few inches or a few feet long. - For this project, I've actually used two different colored pieces of wire.

You might also consider monitoring your PC by using a ping from the RPi, say every 5 minutes and if there is no response repeat the ping and if still no response, run the reset sequence. Using the crontab in Linux is an easy way to run a script/program at set intervals.

Before you begin, make sure your PSU is powered off and unplugged. Please keep in mind, that capacitors inside your PSU store enough current to kill (or at least make you feel uncomfortable). While we will not be working inside your PSU, keep safety in mind. The 'high' wire is connected to the collector and the ground wire is connected to the emitter of the transistor. (emitter & collector connections corrected - thanks to cosax for pointing this out). A post with a diagram can be found here: http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewt ... 46#p446346 Obviously my first step is to install raspbian, get shell access sorted and wire everything up and test if I can control the switching of an LED, im guessing I can just use the same script I have above as this should power it on and off.. Motherboard Power LED Positive (Plz note, i have limited the current here to 5V to make it GPIO safe and use a Y splitter so i can still see the power light on my case, you dont have to do this and could therefore not use this pin)

A simple circuit consisting of a general purpose npn transistor e.g. a 2N5088 and a couple of resistors works fine. I have two RPi's and each one can reset the other one using the reset pins. The same approach would apply to controlling the reset or power switches on a PC. If your motherboard doesn’t have an onboard power button, you can use a screwdriver to jump-start your system. If your PC won’t turn on but motherboard light is on, a potential culprit is the power button on the case itself or the wires connecting that button to the motherboard. There you go, two simple methods to turning on your ATX power supply without having it connected to a motherboard. Being able to do this has been extremely helpful to me as a reviewer, however it also comes in handy if you run a high power Thermoelectric Cooler (aka TEC or pelt) that requires the use of a 2nd PSU. Under the "The following states are available on this system" section, if Hibernate appears, then the feature is enabled. If it's not, continue with the steps below.

As most of you probably know, you cannot simply plug in a PSU to the wall and turn it on. The PSU needs a connection to the motherboard to be told to turn on. When you press the power button on your case, it jumps the green wire to a ground, telling the PSU to turn on. When this “jump” is broken, the PSU shuts off. Panel Nut - A thin hex nut that works with the washer to hold the switch to the case. Threads must match the switch body.
