Description

The novel is about a rural couple named Junior and Hen who, one evening, get a visit from a stranger from a big city corporation. The man is named Terrance, and he comes bearing news that Junior has been longlisted for space exploration, meaning that he’ll be one of the first people to temporarily live in the Installation — a kind of space station set up by the private corporation Terrance works for. As it would turn out, Junior does eventually get selected — but where does that leave Hen? Well, thankfully, Terrance has a replacement Junior for her that acts, talks and thinks just as the real Junior does. And, that, my friends, is where the goings get freaky. Hen gets more and more reserved and standoff-ish as Junior prepares for his day in the sun, and pretty soon the duo is fighting just without resorting to throwing things at each other. In November 2016 Michael Morpurgo won the J M Barrie Award for his contribution to children’s literature. This award is given every year by Action for Children’s Arts to a “children’s arts practitioner” whose lifetime’s work has delighted children and will stand the test of time. urn:lcp:friendorfoe0000morp:epub:6e64d6a2-28be-4874-a3a8-efc6f902872e Foldoutcount 0 Identifier friendorfoe0000morp Identifier-ark ark:/13960/t2m68pg0k Invoice 1213 Isbn 9781405233378 The novel is set during World War II and follows two evacuees to the West Country. Michael's books have been translated into many languages including Chinese, Bulgarian and Hungarian, Hebrew and Japanese. He travels all over the UK and abroad talking to people of all ages at literary festivals, telling his stories and encouraging them to tell theirs.Michael Morpurgo has thrilled and delighted huge numbers of young readers since becoming a children’s author in the early 1970s," Wood said. "Action for Children’s Arts is delighted to recognise Michael’s outstanding contribution by presenting him with the J M Barrie Award 2016. His work will undoubtedly, like Peter Pan, stand the test of time, making him a truly worthy recipient of this award." The story takes place over eight chapters and is easily manageable for more competent KS2 readers due to the simpler sentence structures and choice of vocabulary, although the use of topic-specific vocabulary provides good learning and discussion opportunities. The book is also a good one to read aloud but does require some confidence and creativity due to the variety of characters (children, men and women) with different accents (London, West Country and German). An interesting, entertaining and engaging story as usual from Michael Morpurgo - but he is not at his best here. Holmstrom, John (1998). Friend or Foe by Michael Morpurgo | Goodreads

The style of writing was poor, I felt, but there are plenty of strong opportunities for role-play and research around the book related to WW2. I can imagine writing this as a play with my class Friend or Foe is a gripping World War II story from War Horse author and former Children’s Laureate Michael Morpurgo. Friend or Foe was later shown as part of a theatrical retrospective of Krish's work in 2013 and was also screened at the Melbourne International Film Festival in 2014. [3] [4] Plot [ edit ] It offers the argument that being a German soldier during the Second World War (any war, in fact) does make you an evil person. I also like the idea of asking the question: what happens when you save someone you hate?In this activity, your Ks2 class will identify the speech by either highlighting the inverted commas or adding them in to the passage or sentences.
