Danny and her mother went out before she was born but when Destiny was born, Danny wasnt around anymore. The child characters – and perhaps child reader – end the book thinking that it is great the family are finally united, which I find problematic considering the evident exploitation of the child. A tasty, if not always tasteful, tale of supernatural mayhem that fans of King and Crichton alike will enjoy.

Her writing makes you anxious and jumpy, worried that something will steal out of the shadows to take what’s yours. He left his first family as soon as his first daughter,Destiny, was born and married another woman, Lucy, who was once his fan, leaving Destiny and his wife alone. A shadow on the hospital camera and trampled grass in an area where Lauren claims to have seen the threatening woman suggest one possibility, while Lauren’s own admittance that she’s only been managing a couple of hours of sleep at a time for weeks and is off her depression medication suggest quite another. Heavner isn’t exactly mollified when Tempe, aided by retired police detective Skinny Slidell and a host of experts, puts a name to the dead man. I find the whole premise of changelings fascinating; as a result, I’ve read a lot of books about them.

The novel ends with Destiny, her mother and Sunset all happily preparing for the show, overjoyed that all their dreams have come true: Sunset has a true friend in Destiny, Destiny’s talent has been realised, and Destiny’s mother has the promise of no longer living in poverty. Eventually the case comes to the attention of Detective Jo Harper who starts to see some truth in what Lauren is saying, but this won’t be an easy case to crack, venturing off as it does into the realms of the supernatural! Though there was something of a slow start, it soon picks up pace and let me just say, it doesn’t get much creepier than this! Looking back I'm thinking maybe I wasn't supposed to have any questions about the relationships, and the truths behind them, but the ending left me with unresolved answers and was very abrupt! Once she leaves hospital, her fears don’t dissipate and things really ramp up when her babies are abducted.

Lauren struggles with exhaustion, but with encouragement from her friends and a shove from Patrick, she finally gets it together and takes the boys out for a walk along the river. The summer spooks continue with twins and changelings, a new mom who’s a bit mentally unstable, and a years-old unsolved case of attempted baby-snatching. Destiny lives with her mum on a rundown council estate and the only luck she has ever really had is her mum inheriting money from a former patient.

Her mum is a beautiful ex-model, her dad is a world-famous rock star and her little siblings are celebrities! The book's ending was noted for its ambiguity, which left it unclear whether the events portrayed were caused by supernatural interference or Lauren's psychosis. Instead, after following Harper into the beginning of a seemingly-unrelated case, we learn a very different truth about what has happened, a truth not hinted at in the premise and tangentially mentioned only once in the story. Of course different characters perceive each other in different ways, but Patrick (Lauren’s husband) swung so wildly from devoted family man to selfish cad that it’s impossible to say what kind of person he is or what his motives might be. Through these two women’s experiences we see many other characters dismiss Lauren’s claims primarily because they seem too far-fetched or inconvenient.

The line between certainty and belief; the ambiguity of what's real and what's not; the murky business of trying to establish the truth; all of these elements make this story eerie and incredibly tense. Danny and his second wife had three children, Sunset, Sweetie and Ace, they were very rich and lived in a landed property with three servants, but Danny wasn't really on good terms with Lucy. It’s a creative answer to the problem, but left me feeling like I was in one of those awkward conversations where two people are talking about two different things without realizing that they’re not on the same page. Everyone, that is, except for Joanna Harper, a detective sergeant who tends to follow her instincts and ask permission from superiors later.
