Image credit: Showtime) Dexter season 8 ending explained, how will this work into the upcoming season?

Considering that none of us, really, saw that coming, we're a a bit curious about the future of Dexter: New Blood—or more accurately, if there will even be a future at all. Thankfully, in addition to Alcott, Dexter: New Blood's show-runner seems down for another season. Here's everything we know so far. With the chance of a fresh start in front of him, there's no telling where Harrison will go, or what he will do with what he's learned from his father's moral killer code. In August 2022, TV executive David Nevins continued to stoke the flames of a possible return during his chat with The Hollywood Reporter about future plans for Paramount Global: There are a lot of things. What is the future [of] the Dexter franchise? I am actively working on that." I was worried about it after we shot it, because I was like, 'Oh my God, I killed Dexter. I'm going to be the most hated man in America for at least a week'," the young actor said (via Esquire). The end of Dexter season 8 finds Dexter making choices. His sister Deb takes a bullet during the final showdown with serial killer Saxon. Rushed to hospital and into surgery, she suffers a blood clot during the procedure, and has a stroke. Dexter arrives too late. In what he believes is an act of mercy, takes his sister from life support, loads her onto his boat, the Slice of Life, and drops her body into the water before peeling away. But I also feel incredibly blessed to be part of a story that's going to affect a lot of people. Whether it makes them angry, happy or sad, whether it makes them hate me, whatever, it's cool to tell stories that affect people—regardless of what that effect is."

Alcott spoke of what it was like to play the character responsible for axing a truly memorable anti-hero. Last we saw of the teenage son of a serial killer, he was on the run after shooting his dad dead. Police chief Angela Bishop (Julia Jones) took the blame for Dexter's death after finding Harrison with the body, allowing him to start life anew without the burden of his dad's murder to deal with. The number one rule: Only murder those who deserve to die. By killing off a police officer who was holding him in custody, Dexter broke it.

Side guide

But in a bid to escape Iron Lake as Dexter's past misdeeds started catching up with him, Harrison ended up turning a gun on his dad after he failed to abide by his own rules over who should and shouldn't live. Another Dexter ending to blow up the Internet? Don't mind if we do. Dexter: New Blood, we cannot wait to binge you. Many fans were displeased with the ending, the biggest head scratcher being: why did Dexter take Deb off life support? Most people believe Dexter made the choice, because the stroke placed Deb in a vegetative state, and she truly had no chance of a normal life. Was this supposed to be Dexter showcasing the compassion he had so desperately craved throughout the series? Some glimmer of kindness to hint at his true humanity? Who can say?

Plenty of secret cameos await fans, to. Philips teased: “There will be some returning cast members from the original series that will make some people’s brains explode.” In the finale, it seemed the pair were finally bonding after being reunited, with them both sharing their dark sides and urge to kill. They were both "born in blood" as Dexter himself would say, thanks to historical childhood trauma where both, tragically, were left in tears covered in their parents' blood after their murders. Hall confirms that Dexter "hasn't been killing" since we last saw him, restraining himself from urges. "If he’s going around killing people, he’s going to struggle to have a life… though he does maintain a fantasy that he’s able to do both.” In playing with it, we discovered that it comes up later, it makes a lot more room for a nuanced scene. It's less of just an angry son shooting his dad and more of a mutual discovery that this is how it's supposed to end and it won't work any other way." This "creative take" finds Dexter now living in the fictional town of Iron Lake, New York, where he works as a shopkeeper under the assumed name of Jim Lindsay. A string of incidents in the small town are a cause for concern for Dexter, who believes he's quashed his desires, but fears his "dark passenger" is about to awaken.

Now, that's not an outright no, even if it isn't the promising renewal announcement we were hoping for...

On The Hollywood Reporter TV's Top 5 podcast, Philips chimes in on the controversial season 8 ending, and says the new season won't attempt to rewrite it in any way: "This is an opportunity to make that right, but that's not why we're doing it. We're doing this because there is such a hunger for Dexter out there. We're not undoing anything. We're not doing movie-magic. We're not going to betray the audience and say, 'Whoops, that was all a dream.' What happened in the first eight years happened in the first eight years." You would think the answer to this would be "no" if you watched the season finale. After his past was unearthed, Dexter – who had rebranded himself to become local shop worker Jim Lindsay – finally met a grisly end. The gun came up way earlier in the original version of the scene, so that the entire scene was at gunpoint," Alcott recalls.I think the ending was ‘mystifying’ at best to people," Hall explained during Comic-Con@Home 2021. "‘Confounding,’‘exasperating,’‘frustrating’... the chance to revisit it and, maybe in the process, redefine the sense of the show’s ending and the sense of the show’s legacy more broadly was certainly a part of our motivation.” Alcott admitted to feeling the pressure when it came to the actual shooting in the climactic death scene. As a result, who will be joining the cast list is up for debate. He has no ties to any living relatives that we know of. He could literally go anywhere.
